WIT/VESSES:
UNITED STATES 1'0 au` whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, HARRY SANFORD GAR- DINER, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Amsterdam, in the county ot' Mont- .I S gomery and State of New York, have invented a new and 'Improved Gage, of which the follc'iwing is a full, clear, and exact description. Theinventionrelates to measuring instruments; and itsobject is to provide a new and I improvedgage, more especially designed for 4 conveniently and quickly determining the 1 `sizes of twist-drills and other objects and to gage wires and the like. 1;Q Theinvention consists'of novel features and I5 partsand l'combinations of the same, as will be more fully described hereinafter and then pointed out in the claims.
` Apractical embodiment of the invention is frepresented in the accompanying drawings, f2o forming a part of this specification, in which Asimilar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts 1n all the views.
Figure l is a perspective view of thel improvement asapplied for gaging a wire. Fig. 2. is a'V rear face view of the improvement arranged for measuring a rectangular bar both fj in width and thickness. Fig. 3 is a longitu- ,dinal sectional elevation of the improvement j on the line 3 3 of Fig. 2, and Fig. 4 is a trans- 0 Vverse section of the same on the line 4 4 of Fig. 3.
,forbody A, having at one side a longitudinal fe'Xtension-arm iA', terminating at its outer end in a transverse gage-arm A2, having its inner edge at right angles to the extension-arm A'.
On one face of the frame A is formed a longitudinal guideway A3, in which is mounted to move longitudinally a slide B, adapted to 40 be fastened in any desired position on the `.frame A by a suitable clamping-screw C, which when unscrewed also serves to move the slide B longitudinally into the desired place. The slide B is provided with an integral head B', having its outer edge parallel and adjacent to the inner edge of the gagearm A2, and on one face of the said slid'e is arranged a longitudinal graduation D, indicating linear measurement, preferably in HARRY SANFORD GARDINER, OF AMS'llCltDAM,
` GAGE.
The improved gage is' provided with a frame e ff PATENT OEEICE.

serial No. 198,218. (No modem ses? AVAILABLE- corT thirty-seconds to three-quagters Qfanineh, as l graduation D is arranged a second graduation E, also indicatingv linear measurement, arranged, however, transversely, starting from the inner end of the head adjacent to the arm For measuring the size of a twist-drill, for instance, it is only necessary to pass the twist-drill between the arm A2 and the head B' of the slide and' then read ott' the size of the twist-drill on the graduation D along the bevel edge A4 on the inner end of the frame A. Then it is desired to measure the width and thickness of a bar, as indicated in Fig. 2, then the bar is placed between the arm A2 and the head B', abutting against the inner edge of the extension-arm A'. Fig. 2 it will he seen that the bar can be read on width of the bar thickness of this the graduation Dand the on the graduation E. On the other face of the slide B is arranged a graduation F, (see Fig. 1,) representing the size of wires and the like, the graduation consisting of transverse llines arranged in three adjacent longitudinal columns, and the lines are numbered according to Wire-gage numbers and read ofi' along the beveled edge of a cross-bar A, forming part of the frame A and secured to the sides thereof opposite the beveled edge A4. These columns are preferably three in number, and the central column is provided with close graduations, while the graduations of the columns at the sides thereof are spaced twice as far apart and alternate with each other in extending from the middle of the spaces between the graduations of the central column.
In gaging a wire the latter is placed between the gage-arm A2 and the head B', as plainly shown in Fig. l, the wire is read off on the graduation F-that is, on the line coinciding with the beveled l edge of the cross-bar A5.
The instrument is very simple and durable 1n construction and can be cheaply manufac- 95 By referencev to and then the size of 5'10 Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. A gage, comprising a flat frame having a guideway on one side, an extension-arm extending forwardly from the end of the gage, and terminating in a transverse gage-arm extending inwardly from the end .of said eXtension at right angles thereto, the inner edge of said gage-arm being parallel with the forward end of the frame, a slide received into said guideway, and movable on the frame toward and from said gage-arm, an integral head on said slide projecting laterally from the side edges thereof to form a stop for the slide when moved rearwardly, a cross-bar on the upper face of the frame extending across the guideway at the forward end thereof, the front edge of said cross-bar and the corresponding front edge of the frame being beveled, the slide having on its front side a longitudinal graduation reading forwardly toward the head of the slide and terminating at said head, and a transverse graduation on the head reading outwardly from the rear side of the slide to the front side thereof, wire-gage graduations on the opposite side of *the slide comprising transverse lines in separate columns, one of said columns having comparatively close graduations and the columns at the side thereof having graduations spaced twice as far '765,471 EST AVN @M3115 QG@ apart and alternating with each other in eX- tending from the middle of the spaces between said close graduations, and aclampingscrew carried on said slide and adapted to engage the frame to lock the slide in any desired position thereon.
A gage comprising a frame having a guideway, an extension-arm extending for-` wardly from the end of the gage, and an 1n' tegral inwardly-extending transverse gagearm at the forward end of said extension-arm, said gage-arm being disposed at a right angle to said extension-arm and parallel with the forward end of the frame, a slide fitting in said guideway and movable toward and from said gage-arm, and an integral head on said slide to form a stop therefor, said slide being provided on one face with wire-gage graduations comprising transverse lines in columns, and on the other face with longitudinal and transverse graduations located respectively at the front side and forward end of said slide.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
