ATTACHMENT FOR SALES-COUNTERS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N 0. 571,252, dated November 10, 1896.
Application filed October 30, 1895. Serial No. 567,443. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, HUGH WALKINsHAW and JAMES KAPP, of Lebanon, in the county of Laclede and State of Missouri, have invented a new and Improved Linear Measuring Attachment for Sales-Counters, of which the following is a specification.
Our invention is an improved counter attachment, in which a sliding yardstick is so arranged that it may be moved longitudinally along the same for convenience of use in measuring fabrics or dry goods.
The construction and arrangement are hereinafter described, and shown in accompanying drawings, in Which- Figure 1 is a perspective view of our improved yardstick as in use on a store-counter. Fig. 2 is a cross-section of same on line 2 2, Fig. 1; and Fig. 3 is a detail perspective view of the co unter-moldin g with the yardstick in place.
A indicates the top of a store or shop counter, and a the molding or nosing forming the The said molding a is secured in place by screws and provided with an undercut or dovetail groove 6 in its upper side to adapt it for attachment of the yardstick B. That is to say, the latter has a lengthwise dovetail rib c on its under side, which fits somewhat loosely in the groove 1), so that the yardstick is freely slidable along the edge of the counter A from one point to another, where it may be required for use. A pin 0 is set in groove 1) near one end thereof to prevent the yardstick sliding out of the same. The side edges of the graduated face of the yardstick B overlap the top edges of the groove 17 and are suitably beveled, so that the yardstick offers little or no surface obstruction to use of the counter in the usual way. When thus located and attached, the yardstick 13 cannot become misplaced or lost and is always at hand and accessible when required for use. It also enables more accurate measurements to be made than is practicable with a yardstick held free in the hand.
WVhat we claim is- The combination, with the front molding or nosing of a store-counter, having a length- WlSGdOVGlJELll groove in its upper side, and a stop-pin located at the end of said groove, of the graduated yardstick having a lengthwise dovetail rib that fits loosely in said groove, whereby the yardstick is adapted to slide freely parallel to the edge of the counter, as and for the purpose specified.
