Description

PROTECTIVE STRiR FOR RECORD CARDS Filed May 12, 1931 WWI mun m Wilhelm firm-winger Patented Dec. 8, 1931 UNITED STATES TON RAND INC OF BUFFALO, NEW YORK, A. CORPORATION' PROTECTIVE s'rmr roe mcom cAzans Application filed. May 12, 1931, Serial No. 536m me man October 26, 1926.'
This invention relates to protective strips for record cards and particularly to strips for embracing a marginal portion ofa record card for protecting the edge thereof, particularly where this marginal portion forms the visible margin for the index on the card in visible index equipment.
This invention comprehends the provision of a protective strip or sheath for cards having a portion of the strip formed for interengagement with complementary parts on the card to detachably retain the protective strip on the card. In securing this detachable connection the invention provides a structure in which the connecting means is formed from the material of the sheath or strip with corresponding parts formed from the material of the cards, in order to eliminate the use of additional securing elements and at the same time eificiently mount the sheath on the marginal portion of the card, in such a manner, that it may be readily applied or removed without injuring the connecting part or portions of the card and also permitting relative movement between the card and strip to compensate for differences in expansion.
The invention comprehends other features and improvements in obtaining the detachable mounting of the protective strip on the margin of the card which are pointed out in the following detailed description, it being understood, however, that various changes in the size, shape and relation of the parts may be made without departing from the scope of the invention as set forth in the claims.
In the drawings:
Fig. 1 is a rear face view of a portion of a card having the protective sheath-applied to one marginal portion of the card and illustrating features of the present invention.
Fig. 2 is a cross-section taken on line 2r-2 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is a view similar to Fig. 1 showing a slightly different form of connecting means for securing the strip to the card.
Fig. 4 is a cross-section taken on line 44 of Fig. 3. I
A record card of any suitable type, such for example as the record cards used in visible index equipment, is illustratedat 1 in Fig. 1, and has the marginal portion '2 formed with a plurality of bosses 3 obtained by slightly.
PATENT om cs WILHELM H. HEISINGER, or BERLIN-ZEHLEND RF,GERMANY, ASSIGNOR T0 REMING- offsetting portions of the body of the card to one side thereof. As shown in Figs. land 2 these bosses 3 are of partially spherical form to provide a series of vdepressions in' one face of the record card. 1
A sheath or protective-strip 4, usually formed of transparent celluloid, or similar material, is folded upon itself at 5 to provide fold portions Sand 7 overlying each other in v superposed relation and embracing o'pposite faces of card 1 along the marginal portion 2, to entirely enclose and protect this marginal portion with the fold portion 5 extending around the edge of the card, as shown in Fig. 2.- The fold portion 7 is formed with a plurality of bosses -8 formed-by ofiset ting portions of the material forming fold portions '7 inwardly toward fold portion 6. These'bosses '8 are formed so as to correspond in number and position with bosses 3 in marginal portion 2 of the card so thatthey will engage in the depressions formed in the record card b the bosses as illustratedfin Fig. 2. The old portion 7 of the strip *or' sheath is preferably located at the rear face of thecard and theinherentresiliency' of the material forming sheath or strip &'is utilized; tonormally hold fold portions6- and 7 in contacting relation and when appliedlto mar-' ginal portion 2 of the card with bosses 8 en desired. By the rounded form'of the bosses 3 and 8 it will be apparent that the sheath may be applied or detached from the card in a convenient manner without likelihood oftearing the card along the marginal portion and that differences of expansion between the card, a pocket is formed between fold pori card and sheath can occur without causing either to wrinkle, buckle or warp.
The record card9 illustrated in Figs. 3 and 4: has a marginal portion 10 formed with a plurality of openings or slots 11. A protective strip or sheath 12 is folded at 13 to pro vide front andrearfold portions 14: and 15 respectively, to embrace opposite faces of marginal portion 10 of the card. The front fold portion 14 is provided with a series of openings 16 inregistry with openings 11 in marginal portion 10, and the rear fold portion 15 is formed with rectangularbosses or projections 17 adapted to extend through openings 11 and 16, in the manner illustratedin Fig. 4, for detachably mounting the sheath or strip on the-marginal portion of the card. 7
These bosses or projections are formed in both :Figs. 2 and at from the body of the material by offsetting portions thereof to one side-of the normal plane of the fold portion, in order that these projections or heads will have rounded surfaces or corners that will reduce the tendency totear the'card along themarginal portion in applying or removing the sheath or strip.
-It-will be further understood that bosses 3, or beads 17 may be so arranged, that cards or signals may be engaged between an adj acent pair and thereby limited in endwise movement along the margin of the card. I
Whatis claimed is:
1. In combination, a card having one marginal portion formed with socket portions,
and aprotective sheath formed toprovide a pair of superposed fold portions overlying opposite faces of said card along said marginal portion, oneiof said fold portions having bosses formed therein for engagement in said socket portions, whereby said card and sheath are detachably connected together.
2. In combination, a card having one marginal portion formed with attaching parts, anda protective sheath formed to provide" a pair of superposed fold portions overlying the opposite faces of the marginal portionof said card, one of said fold portions having bosses offset from the body portion thereof and having rounded surfaces detachably engaging the attaching part on'the margin of'said'card fordetachably connecting said sheath thereto.
f In testimony whereof I aflix my signature.
