Remington Rand 3 Claims. This invention relates to an index card and holder particularly adapted for use in connection with visible indexes.

Card holder or backing sheet l is formed of a secured by Wire staples or the like to a supporting lug 4 in a manner well known in the art, 4 projecting beyond the ends of Tip 5 forms a guide member on the free margin of card holder l and for the purpose of the present invention another tip H formed in the same manner as tip 5 is mounted adjacent the row of openings 2 forming the hinge. Tip II in opposed the right hand side of the card holder as illustrated, terminates short of the adjacent end of the card holder so that tip I I is shorter than the card holder is wide.

A front record card I3 is slidably mounted in guides 5 and Il shown in Fig. 1 and arranged in superimposed relation on top of card holder I. The opposite margins of card I3 engage in the respective guides 5 and II. The right-hand end of the card as shown in Fig. 1 engages wire stitch. 8 thereby preventing endwise movement in one direction relative to card holder I. .Endwise movement of front card I3 in the opposite direction is prevented by projection Il on the upper corner of card I3 extending beyond the end of tip II for engagingthe end of the tip. The card is inserted and removed from tips II and 5 by flexing the card in the center to shorten the distance between the upper and lower edges to less than the distance between tips or guides 5 and II. Upon insertion of the margins of card I3 in guides 5 and I I in ilexed condition the card is then released and allowed to flatten whereupon it assumes the position shown in Fig. 1.

A finger opening I5 is formed in the edges of front card I3 and card holder I on the left-hand end as shown in Fig. 1. Adjacent the end provided with finger opening I5, front card I3 is formed with a plurality of openings I6 arranged in aligned relation as shown in Figs. 1 and 5. These openings I6 form display openings for displaying data on index card I1 slidably mounted in the pocket formed between front card I3 and card holder I. The opposite margins of'index card I1 slidably engage in guides 5 and II in a manner that will be clear from an inspection of Fig. 1 of the drawing. Finger openings I5 allow the end of index card I1 to be manually grasped so that it may be slidably moved out of its housed position in the pocket between front card I3 and card holder I. Slidable movement of index card I1 relative to front card I3 will cause any record matter printed thereon to be successively displayed through openings I6 in card I3.

This construction provides for the application of suitable tabulated data, data for computing insurance rates, or any other mathematical computation ydata or tables of various sorts to the face of card I1 by printing such data in lines across the card in alignment with apertures I6. The data in each line may be different so that various apertures I6 overlying different sections or lines of data on index cards I1 may display different correlated data through the different openings for each position of the card and in this way provide a convenient and speedy means of obtaining information of various sorts from index card I1. Card I1 may be slidably moved in and out from behind front card I3 in the operation of the device to obtain data on card I1 in properly arranged display through openings I6.

Card holder I with front card I3 and index card I1 may be conveniently arranged in a visible card index system of a character well known in the art to cooperate therewith in any desired manner to supply data for use in connection with such an index. Front card I3 may be used forany desired record information that it may be' found desirable to enter thereon in connection with the index with which it is associated.

In this connection and in connection with index card I1 suitable indexing signals of various kinds may be utilized along the visible marginal edge of card holder I by engaging, such signals,

assesses` as indicated at I3, gin of front card I3 engaged in tip 5 will be the visible margin of the card in a visible index system and may be designed to receive appropriate indexing infomation, and in addition, may be provided with suitable printed indications for cooperation with signal I8 such as the months of the year and the days of the month.

Front card I3 and index card I1 may be readily removed by flexing the same to disengage them from guides 5 and II and they may be replaced with new index cards using new data adapted for` operation in connection with the keeping of any suitable record in card holder I that may be desired. Openings I5 may be arranged at any p0rtion of index card I3 found desirable and in some cases their arrangement may not be in alignment as illustrated but may be staggered throughout different portions of the card.

The invention claimed is:

1. An index card and holder comprising a back supporting member of sheet material, a paia of spaced parallel guides mounted on said member, a front card having opposite margins engaged in said guides, means on said member and front card for retaining said card against sliding movement in said guides and in superimposed relation on said member to form a pocket therebetween, said front card being formed with a plurality of openings, and an index card slidable in said guides and in said pocket for the display of sections thereof through said openings.

2. In a card index, a back sheet member forming a card holder, a pair of folded strip members mounted on said card holder in spaced parallel and opposed relation to form guides, a front card having opposite margins slidable in said guides, means on the card holder and card for retaining said card in one position against sliding movement, said card being formed with a plurality of display openings, and an index card having opposite edges slidable in said guides and located between said front card and card holder and having portions showing through said display openings.

3. In a card index, a back sheet member forming a card holder, means on one margin for attachment to a support, said card holder having a hingle formed therein adjacent said means whereby the remainder of said card holder may be,swung on said hinge relative to said margin, a folded transparent tip of sheet material embracing and mounted on the opposite margin of said card holder to form a guide, means securing the fold portions of said tip together at one end, another guide mounted on said card holder adjacent said hinge in parallel relation to said tip, a front card superimposed on said card holder with opposite margins slidably engaged in said guides for forming. a pocket with said card holder, one end of said front card being adjacent said securing means for one end of said tip to retain said card against sliding movement in one direction, a projection on said card extending beyond the last-mentioned guide for engagement with the end thereof to retain said front card against sliding movement in the other direction, and a record card between said front card and card holder having opposite margins slidable in said guides for sliding movement relative to -said front card and cooperation with indicating means on said front card for displaying correlated index data.
