UNITED STATES PATENT QEErcE.
JOHN F. STEINER, OF DUBUQUE, IOWA.
IMPROVEMENT IN BURGLAR-ALARMS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 183,430, dated October 17, 1876; application led September 1, 1876.
To all whom fit may concern Be it known that I, JOHN F. STEINER, of the city and county of Dubuque, and State of Iowa, have invented certain Improvements in Burglar-Alarms, Window-Fasteners, and Window Holders or Supporters, of which the following is a full and exact descriptiomreference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
The object of this invention is such a construction of a burglar-alarm, window fastener and supporter, as will give an alarm whenever a window is attempted to be raised; also, to prevent the window from being raised; and, further, when raised, to support said window in any given position.
rlhe invention consists in the construction and combination of its several parts.
In the drawings forming a part of this speci This trigger is also supplied with a spring, c,
that prevents it from freeing the hammer unless pressure be applied to the under side ofthe trigger; d, the spring that forces down the hammer a, when released, upon the cap e e, the paper percussion-cap (which may be pasted on strips of iirm cloth or paper) placed upon the hard surface of the casing h, directly under the hammer; h h, the casings of the alarm turned into a hooked shape over the end of the trigger at k,- g, pins fastened in the side of the window-sash upon which the hook Vla catches, and supports the window when raised.
The manner of operating this invention is l as follows The alarm is screwed to the casing of the window (allowing thevlower end to swing freely) just over the sash, the hammer a is then drawn back and cocked, and the cap c placed on the plate directly under the hammer. The raising ot' the window-sash presses up the trigger b, which releases the hammer a, and it is forced down by the spring d upon the cap c, exploding it, and causing a sharp report. Resting,-as it does, one end of the casing upon the window-sash, it prevents the raising ot' the window.
When used as a window supporter, the hooked partof the casing h, at lo, catches into the pins or projections g, and supports the sash.
The largest of thepins g is placed about eight or ten inches from the top of the sash, and the alarm hooked into the pin just above it. The alarm then serves as a lock to prevent the window from being lowered or raised without giving` the alarm.
I disclaim the broad invention of a burglaralarm forming a sash-fastener, and operated by the raising of the window; but
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and for which I desire Letters Patent, is i The combination, with a window-sash, provided with the pins or projections g of the swinging burglar-alarm h, having the hook 7a, hammer a, and trigger b, constructed and arranged substantially as described and shown.
J. F. STEINER. In presence of- MoNRoE M. GADY, O. W. HOW.
