DETONATING BURGLAR-ALARIVI.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N o. 530,947, dated December 18, 1894.
Application filed September 29, 18 94.
To a/ZZ whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMES-VV. HORN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Arba, in the county of Randolph and State of Indiana, have invented a new and useful Burglaralarm, of which the following is a specificalon.
The invention relates to improvements in burglar alarms.
The object ofthe present invention is to improve the construction of burglar alarms, and to provide a simple and inexpensive de vlce, adapted to be readily applied to a Window sash, and capable of exploding a cap in the event of an attempt to raise the sash.
further object of the invention is to provide such a device, in which the parts will be compactly arranged, and' protected, and not liable to get out of order, or become broken.
The invention consistsin the construction ,and novel combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter fully'described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and pointed out in the claim hereto appended. j
In the drawingsz-Figure l is a perspective View of a burglar alarm constructed in accordance with this invention. Fig. 2 is a transverse sectional view of the same, showing the burglar alarm applied to a window in position to be engaged by the lower sash. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal sectional view.
Like numerals of reference indicate correspending parts in all the figures of the drawings.
l designates a tubular casing designed to be mounted on the upper sash of a window, and provided at one side with a longitudinal opening or slot 2, communicating with the ,longitudinal bore, and receiving an arm 3 of a spring actuated hammer 4 adapted to explode a cap. The hammer 4 is rounded to conform to the configuration of the bore of the tubular casing, and its rear end is engaged by a spiral sprin g 5, which bears .against a plug 6 fitted in one end of the casing, and secured to the same by a screw 7, which also serves as the means for attaching the device to the upper sash 8 of the window.
The casing is provided at the lower side of Serial Ilm-524,486. (No model.)
the longitudinal slot 2 with a notch 9, which receives the arm 3 when the hammer is moved rearward against the action of the spring, for the purpose of setting the device; and the arm 3 projects outward from the upper sashv sufficiently to be engaged by the lower sash, should the latter be raised. The lower sash in raising lifts the arm 3 out of engagement with the notch 9, andthe spiral spring throws the hammer forward into engagement with a cap-holding plug or block 10.
The cap holding plug or block 10 is round, to conform to the configuration ofthe casing, and it is provided at itsinner end with a nipple-shaped projection 1l, adapted to receive an ordinary percussion cap, which is placed on the projection after the block or plug has been removed. The block o r plug is provided with a transverse perforation l2, which receives a removable keyor pin 13, passing through registering openings 14 of the casing.
It will be seen that the burglar alarm is simple and comparatively inexpensive in construction, that it is adapted to be readily applied to a window, and that the parts are compactly arranged and concealed within the tubular casing.
It will also be apparent that the device may be readily arranged adjacent to adoor, or the like, in position to be discharged by the opening of the door.
Changes in the form, proportion, and the minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the principle or sacrificing any of the advantages of this invention.
What I claim is- A burglar alarm, comprising a tubular casing, having at one side a longitudinal slot and provided at the bottom of the same with a notch, a plug arranged within one end of the casing, a fasteningdevice passing through the casing'and the plug and serving as the means for securing the device to a window or the like, a hammer arranged within the casing and conforming to the configuration thereof, and provided with an arm located in the slot of the casing and adapted to Yengage the notch, a spiral spring located within the oas- In testimony that I claim the foregoing as ing and interposed between the plug and the my own I have hereto axed my signature in 1o hammer for actuating the latter,a removable the presence of two witnesses.
plug or block fitted in the casing at the other T 5 end thereof and provided at its inner end JAMES Y" HORN' with a cap receiving projection, and a pin or Vituesses: key passing through the easing and the block E. J. HINSHAW,
or plug, substantially as described. WILL CLARK.
