UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOSEPH H. COWL AND RICHARD F. LUMLEY, OF NEWARK, OHIO.
IMPROVEMENT IN CRIB ATTACHMENTS FOR BEDSTEADS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 183,372, dated October 17, 1876; application filed September 13, 1876.
To all whom t may concern Be it known that we, JOSEPH H. COWL and RICHARD F. LUMLEY, ofNewark, in the county of Licking and State of Ohio, -have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bed and Crib 5 and we do hereby declare that the 'following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification. y
This invention relates to beds and cribs, having for its object to simplify the construction ofthe same, which will be simple in construction, efticient in operation, and not liable to get out of repair; and it consists in combining, with a bed, a crib having a spring motion of itself, whereby the springs in the bottom of the crib are dispensed with, and whereby the crib can be closed to the bed when not in use, and the combination of parts, as will be hereinafter more fully described.
In the annexed drawing, Figure 1 represents a plan view of the bedstead, represent ing the crib attached, and showing in dotted lines the crib as in position when not in use; and Fig. 2 is a vertical transverse section on line w x of Fig. 1.
Like letters of reference indicate like parts.
A represents the head piece, B the footpiece, C the side rails, and D the cross-bars, of an ordinary bedstead. Near the center of the said bedstead is a wide bar, E, and beneath the said bars is a longitudinal bar, F, and on the outside rail, on the lower side,I use a slotted rail, G. On the under side of the bar E is attached a spring, H, between which and the cross-bar E is placed a spring, I. J represents a sliding crib, composed of a side piece, K, end pieces L, and bottom bars M. The side pieces L, when in use, are folded as represented in Figs. l and 2, and held in position by hooks a, and are provided on their outer ends with hinges b, so when the crib is not desired to be used the hooks a are released, the ends L opened, as represented in.
position to prevent the crib from sliding out too far, as the crib is limited in its outward movement as it comes in contact with the longitudinal slotted bar F.
The center bar of the crib passes beneath the spring H, and there is sufficient space left between the bars G and F, so that when the crib is drawn out the same is at liberty to rise and fall, by the actions of the spring H I, to a distance or degree corresponding with the weight placed in the crib, While the spring H, pressing down upon the center bar of the crib, holds the same in position when in use, and also when not in use, as the case may be.
By this construction a cheap, simple, and
desirable invention is procured, affording all the necessities required when in use, and one that can be put entirely out of the way when not in use.
Having thus fully described our invention, what we claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The crib J, having the folding ends and slats M, in combination with the bars Gr and N and the springs H I, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. The barsY F, G, and N, and the crib J, in combination with the springs H I and trailsverse bar E of the bedstead, substantially as and for the purpose set forth. i
In testimony that we claim the foregoing as our own we affix our signatures in presence of two witnesses.
Witnesses C. A. STEVENS, D. C. M. EvANs.
