THOMAS BIRCH, OF CINCINNATI, OHIO, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF HIS RIGHT TO HENRY RANSHAW, OF SAME PLACE.
IMPROVEMENT IN LOCK STOP-BOXES FOR SERVICE-COCKS 0F GAS AND WATER MAINS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 183,365, dated October 17, 1876; application filed September 8, 1876.

Be it known that I, THOMAS BIRCH, of Cincinnati, Hamilton county, Ohio, have invented a new and useful Lock Stop-Box for the Service-Cocks of Gas and Water Mains, of which the following is a specication:
My invention relates to an improved construction of cap or lid for the boxes which afford access for the key or Wrench by means ot which the service-cocks of street-mains are closed and opened.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a perspective view of a lock stop-box and lid embodying my improvements, the lid being detached. Fig. 2 is an axial section of these members in their closed condition.
The box A is a cylindrical tube, Whose 10W- er end incloses' the spigot-head ofthe servicecock in the usual manner, and whose upper end has an interior flange, c, which, besides adding strength to the box, affords a restingplace for the lid or cap B. Said ange also serves as a projection, under which engages a spur or tongue, C, that extends from the under portion of the lid. The said flange is recessed at a for the counter-swell b of a cav' ity, b', diametrically opposite to the said tongue C, for the head d of a screw-bolt, D, which, when the lid is in position, occupies a screwthreaded orifice, c, in the recessed portion a' of the ange A, and an orifice, b, in cavity b.
When locked, as in Fig. 2, the head and collar are entirely inclosed in the cavity b', and consequently' cannot be disturbed except by the use of the proper key E.
I claim as new and of my invention- The lock stop-box A, having the recessed and screw-tapped interior flange a, a/ a, in combination with the cap or lid B, having the tongue C, and the cavity b' b for the Screwbolt D d, whose head is flush with the top of said lid, as set forth.
