CUTTING INSTRUMENT Filed Sept. 9. 1929 INVENTOR 07m /V. efmeu 24 ATTORNEYS Patented Nov. 24, 1931 UNITED STATES. PATENT OFFICE? omino M. BEAT-BUD, on SEATTLE, wAsHrNe'roN comme INSTRUMENT i applicati@ filed september aises.' serial No. 391,355; y y u ,Y the cutting instrument shown in the preced-l f1ngv1evvs. 'a
. j Figure 4 isan enlarged longitudinal sec- My invention relates to and has for a purpose the provision of acutting' instrument of simple, substantial andcompact construction,
by which cutting or scraping operationscan be manually effected with a blade embodied in the instrument, and with the utmost ease and dispatch. Y f
It is another purpose of my invention to provide a cutting instrument of the abovedescribed character embodying means by which extremities or rcorners of the blade at its cutcan be exposed from the casing offth'e instrument for cutting operations, to the exclusion 1b of the remainderof the blade, all while providing the necessary firm and stable support for the cutting edge of the blade.
It is a further purpose of my inventionto provide a cutting instrument Vwherein its casing and a cap therefor `co-act to provide a pair of spaced abutments for confining against axial displacement, a rotary actuator for a blade carrying holder in the casing, so that the actuator will be rendered operative for the advancing of the blade from the casing'and its retraction into the casing.
Another purpose of my invention is the provision of a cutting instrument wherein the cap thereof is detachably secured to the casing, and the actuating means for the blade carrying holder is so associated therewith, that upon removal of the cap, the holder, blade and actuating means can be withdrawn as a unit from the casing for sharpening or replacement of the blade.
I will describe only one form of cutting instrument embodying my invention and will then point out the novel features thereof in claims.
In the accompanying drawings,
Figure 1 is a view showing in side elevation one form of cutting instrument embodying my invention, with the cutting edge of the blade exposed from the casing of the instrument for use.
Figure 2 is a view similar to Figure 1 and illustrating only the toe and heel portions of the cutting blade exposed from the casing for use.
Figure 3 isa longitudinal sectional view of v`received inthe slot 16 and'forms tional viewv taken onthe lined-4 of'Figure 3 andloolring the directionof the arrowsf Figure V5 is an enlarged Vtransversesectional view taken on the line 5-1-5 of Figurejgiandl looking in the direction y'of the arrows;- y
Figure 6 is a perspective view of the blade and i i -i l vFigure 7 is a fragmentary perspective view of Athe Ycasing ofthe instrument.' l
Referring specifically to thedrawings in which ysimilar reference characters designate holder embodied in the fcutting' instrument,
invention in its present embodiment com'- support Vthe blade for movement through a slot 141C in the oblique endof the casing. The cuttingbladeis carried by a holder'I-I in the form of a rectangular block Of`metal15-"in- ,A #'65 similar 1parts in each of the several views, my
sertable with the bladev into thev other and Y. open end Lof theV casing, which is provided Y zwitha slot 16 extendinglongitudinally of `80 ofthe slot 164 provides a shoulderorabut-l the casing fromlits open endlf- The inner-end ment 17 for a rotary actuator Awhich is p part of an actuating means for the holder.
In the present instance the actuator is in the form of, a. milled nut 18 th-readedly mounted ona threaded rod 19 ixedga'gainst rotation to the holder H in any suitable manner. A 'cupl shaped capg20'telescopi'cally receives and closes the open end of the casing;
` and th'esopen' end edge of thecap provides va second abutment 21 spaced from the abutment 17. With the cap applied to the casing as shown din the drawings, the actuator A is interposed between and is in abutting relation "to 'the abutments 17 and 21, so as' to vbe confined by the abutmentsagainst axial' displacement and thereby'be rendered operable when rotated manually in oneA direction or theV other, to advance the blade yfronrithe casing y or retract it into the latter through the medi- Wall ofthe cap, which is adapted to snap into um of the threaded rod 19 being fed axially l by the actuator.
The cap 20 is detachably secured tothe casing'so as to be rendered removable, by the provision of a bead 22 formed on the inner a correspondingly shaped groove 23 formed in the outer Wall of the casing, yetis disen-.
gageable from the groove when suilicient pull is exerted upon the cap ina direction to remove it from the casing.
In the present instance the blade B is'ipro-v l vided with two cutting edges 24C` and Y25y at opposed ends thereof; and theJ blade is con- !nected to the holder H for movement there- With yet is rendered reversible endfor end on l -the holder for theuse of one cuttingedge yor ind.
`thef'otherybymeansof a pin 26 fixed tothe `holder and entering an opening 27V formed in v theblade intermediateits ends, the blade seat-V i-ngatwise Vin Va recess y28 formed :in the holder by reducing its'thickness from one The 'cuttingedgesofthe blade extend obliquely thereof at the samer angle as the obliquetendlO of the casing so 'as to be disposed parallel to the' latter; landfor the Vpurpose of permitting only the extremities or the toe and ,heel portions of acutting edge of the lblade to .be exposed from the casing for cuttingopera- -Y tions,to the'exclusion of the intermediatepor-v tion of the cutting'edge as shoWn-inFigure 2,
' the corners of the casing at its oblique' end 10 arefrecessed as vindicated at 29. It Will be clear that by the provision of the recesses 29, either lthe toe and heel portions or the entire length of a cutting edge of the blade can be .projected from the casing as desired or the blade retractedinto the casing, all in re- Lsponse to rotation Vof the actuator A in one `another. Y VAlthough IY tobe reversed end for endon the holder for use of the other cutting edge` of the blade, or the 'bladeresharpened'or replaced with embodying my invention, it is to be understood that variouschanges and modifications maybe made therein Without departing from the spirit of the invention andthe spirit and scope of the appended claims*V Y Y. f I claim:
Y1. A cutting instrument comprisinga casremoved.`
lmanner that a portion of the blades cutting edge can be projected through the opening,
While other portions' of the cutting edge are disposed parallel with the Walls of. the opening and are rigidly supported by the Walls in the casing. Y
2. A cutting instrument comprising a casing, a holder movably mounted in the casing, Aa blade carried by the holder and having a cutting edge provided With toe and heel portions, means for actuating the holder to exposethe cutting edge of the rblade from the casing for cutting, and means whereby the ltoe and heel portions of the blades cutting vedge can be exposed from the casing for cut-v .,ting, While the intermediate portion-v of lthe {cutting edge iscdisposed in thecasing;
., 3'. A cutting instrument comprising ga cas'- ing open at anendthereo, a holder insertable through thevope'n end of the Vcasing into the latter, ablade ,carried Yby the holder the casing having a slot extending fromrvits open end tovprovide Van abutment at the innerrend `of the slotya `capclosing thelopen end of ,the
holder and providing a, second abutment l spaced from the iirst labutment, a2 threaded rod irixed to the holder, a nut threaded on the rod and. disposed in the slot ofithecasing between` the abutments solas to be-connedby the latter f againstl axial `,displacement and 1 4,thereby co-,act Withsaid rod in advancing the blade from the casingor retractingthe bladel .into the casing according as thenut is rotated one direction or the other,'and means for ldetachably securing the cap to the casing to permit Withdrawal of the holder, blade, rod andnut from the casing as a unit, through the open end .of the latter, when the cap is.
