My present inventionrhas reference to a glove or mitten especially designed for `use by huskers and having its hand or body portion constructed from a single piece ofnia.- 5 terial and its thumb portion constructed of one or more pieces of material which are attached to a particular and peculiarly shaped opening in the body of the glove or mitten and which thumb portion-has its seam` arranged outwardly instead of inwardly as is common, so that. the thumb, which is mostly brought to use in this type of articles, and the body of the glove at the juncturevof the connection of the thumb thereto, yare reinforced at a greater vdegree than is ordinary and will consequently withstand more strain than can be expected of an ordinary type of glove or mitten. j A still further object is to provide a glove :U or mitten of this type with a double thumb, whereby the glove or mitten can be worn on either hand of the husker, which not only materially facilitates the arrangement of the glove on the users hand, but permits of the same being reversed thereon, so that both sides of the glove or mitten may be utilized which, of course, gives the glove or mitten at least twice the life of a glove or mitten provided with a single thumb portion.

A still further object is the construction of a double thumb glove or mitten in which the thumb portions are attached to the body portion of the glove or mitten in such manner as to give added strength and fullness and which will render the glove bigger and roomier, but at the same time affording a perfect fit throughout.

To the attainment of the foregoing the invention consists in the improvement hereinafter described and definitely claimed.

The body ofthe glove or mitten is indicated by the numeral l and la, respectively, andv is in the main of the usual construction and has attached thereto the wrist portion i?, 2 and 2a respectively. In the preferred emi bodiment ofthe improvement the body, beforeV the edges :or finger portions thereof are stitched together, is formed with a double opening and a depending portion 3 between the openings. The openings are substantially oval-shaped as disclosed by Figure 4 of the drawings and indicated by the Acharacters 4. The outer edges provided by the rounded openings are curved toward the center of the *W portion which I have termed the tongue 3. There is-stitched tothe body 1 or 1a around the said openings a double thumb which is formed from ablank as disclosed by Figure 5 of the drawings. The edges of the thumb portions vand 6 ofthe blank are stitched W together at' the outer portions thereof in counter-distinction to the inner stitches whichconnect the blank of the thumb portion of an ordinary gloveor mitten. This, totigo gether with the tongue 3 providesthe important features of the improvement, the seams being on the back of the thumb, which,

`of course, is not in the way of the user of the improvement and will not rip or wear out as they are not subjected to the wear or strain usual to the seam on the inner edges of the thumb portion of such glove or mitten. The tongue 3 gives added strength and fullnessras well as serving as a double reinforcementfor the two thumbs and also spaces the ma two adjoining thumbs to make them in a plane or level of the `hand giving them a better fit which insures better wearing qualities. The fullness is such that the glove or mitten will not fit tightly across the knuckles or back of the hand. This not only adds fullness to the thumb but, in other words, makes the glove or mitten bigger and roomier. The fit, however is perfect throughout the glove or mitten and as above inferred will prevent ripping and strain and at the same time does not pull in the thumb'portion, or against the seams.

The single thumb glove or mitten has only a single elliptical opening 7 in the body thereof but the body, at the inner wall provided by this opening, is formed with an extending portion in the nature of a tongue 8' which is similar to the tongue 3 and which affords the desirable features recited in connection with the said tongue 3. The single thumb 9 has its edges stitched together upon the outer side thereof in a ma nner similarto thatv above described.

The foregoing description has-reference to the constructions disclosed by Figures 1` to 8 of the drawings. In the remaining ligures of. the drawings I have illustrated another form or modiiica'tion of the' improvement. In this construction the body or hand portion 10 of the glove or mitten is stamped from a single piece of suitable material and has its lower edge provided at the center thereof with two oppositely directed substantially elliptical slots or openings 1'1 that afford a substantially V-shaped tongue 1Q therebetween. By reference especially to Figure '10 of the drawings it will bev seen that the center of the tongueis arranged in a line with the inwardly'rounde'd end portions that provide the foretinge'rs 13 of the glove. In stitching the body portion 10 the same is folded in a line with the' center of the tongue 12 and the inwardly directed rounded portions provided at the portion of the body that provides the foreiingers and the edges of the foretingers as well as the remaining fingers of the blank are stitched together. The stitched portions of the gloveare turned inwardly so that no ridges or abrupt surf-aces are provided when the body 10 is stitched.

The double thumb isformed from a blank which is best illustrated by Figure 11 of the drawings. This blank, indicated by the numeral 14, has its upper edge cut to provide a substantially V-shaped portion, the outer edges of the said portion being rounded inwardly as indicated by the numerals 15 and from thence outwardly to provide the outer portions 16 of the double thumb.

The blank 14, from its inner edges is concaved, as at 17, to a suitable distance from the straight center portion thereof. The blank providing the double thumb is stitched as previously described and the edges thereof are, of course, stitched to the edges of the blank 10 provided by the elliptical openings l1 and the tongue 12.

After the double thumb portion is stitched to the body or hand portion of the glove there is stitched to the said body portion and to the straight edge of the double thumb a Wrist band 18 as disclosed by Figure 9 of the drawings.

The-construction and advantages of the invention will, it is thought,.be understood and appreciated by those skilled in the art so that further detailed description will not be required.

Having described the invention, I claim:

A glove or mitten comprising a hand portion constructed from a single piece of material folded upon itself and stitched together, said body having substantially oval shaped openings extending inwardly from one edge ofsaid body and inclined towards each other and communicating to provide a substantially U-shaped tongue centrally between said openings, a doubley thumb portion stitched to the' han'd portion about the openings and to the tongue, and a wrist band stitched to the body and thumb portion and cooperating with the latter in closing the openings.
