To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that l, PHILIP KENNEDY, a citizen of the United States, and .resident of Gloversville, in the county of Fulton and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Baseball Gloves, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates generally to improvements in gloves, more particularly to improvements in gloves of the class. known as fielders gloves, and it consists in the combinations, constructions and arrangements herein described and claimed.

An object of the invention is to provide a glove of the character described which is constructed in such manner asto ailord'relatively great protection to the fingers of a wearer and to hold the fingers against be ing bent backward and broken by the impact of a ball strikingiagainst the palm of the glove.

A further object of the invention is to provide a glove of the character described which has means for staying the finger stall and thumb stall portions thereof to one another and for binding such portions together so that a relatively deep pocket is provided in the palm of the love and the adjacent finger and thumb stall portions of the glove are held against spreading to an extent sutlicient to permit a ball striking the palm of the glove to escape from the glove.

A further object of the invention is to provide a glove of the character described which has the relatively movable portions thereof adjustably connected together in such manner as to. yield under the impact of a ball striking the palm of the glove to provide the relatively deep cket in which the ball will be snared while at the .same time the relatively movable portions Other objects and advantages will be ap-- parent from the following description, considered in conjunction with the accompanydrawinp, in whichin Figure 1 is a plan view showing a glove embodying the invention, the glove being disposed with the back thereof uppermost, Figure 2 is a section on the line 2-2 of Figure 1,

Referring now to the drawings, a glove formed according to the invention comprises abody indicated generally at 1, the body being provided with finger stall portions respectively designated 2, 3, 4 and 5, and a thumb stall portion 6. The body 1 comprises an outer cover designated generally at 7, an inner lining 8 and packing 9 arranged between certain portions of the covering 7 and lining 8, as is usual in a glove of the class described. The cover 7 is of novel construction and will be hereinafter described in detail.

The cover 7 comprises a palm 10 formed integrally with the finger fronts 2 3, 4 5 and also with the outer half portion 2 of the back of thefourth finger and with the lateral

11 and 12 respectively of the back of the glove cover. An. opening is formed at the juncture of the lateral back section 12 and the palm 10 and from this opening extends a thumb piece 14 which is joined at its base to the adjacent edge portions of the back section 12 and the palm 10. The portions of the cover 7 surrounding the base of the thumb piece 14 are thus formed in one continuous piece which produces a relatively strong construction and at the same time a cover which is adapted to flex or give at the juncture of the thumb piece and palm so that a relatively deep pocket will be formed when a ball strikes the palm of the glove at the juncture of the latter with the thumb iece. p The cover back also includes an outer section 15 of the front or first finger back which is joined along its outer edge for the greater part of the length of the latter to the outer edge of the finger front 5 as indicated at 16 and is joined along its outer edge d Three fiburchettes 20 and a like number of cover back sections 21 are arranged between the inner edges of the finger back sections 2 and 15, each of the fourchettes being formed to provide a substantially V-shaped notch at its rearward edge receiving a substantially V-shaped projecting front end portion of one of the back sections 21 and being secured to the latter as at 22. Each of the back sections 21 is secured at its rearward edge to the piping 18 and the fourchettes 20 are secured at their inner edges to the finger fronts and at their outer edges to one another or to the finger back sections 2" and 15, as is usual.

The connected together edge portions of the respective parts of thecover which have been described are preferably joined by welt seaming so that the connected together parts are not likely to rip apart at the seams and a relatively strong cover construction is thus produced.

It of course will be understood that the lining 8 conforms substantially in contour to the cover 7 and may consist of any suitable or desired number of parts secured toether by stitchingror in any other suitable l cnown manner. he provision of the V- shaped seams or joints between the fourchettes and the back sections insures a glove body which will be extremely flexible at the juncture of the finger stalls with the palm portion of the body, whereby the body will give in a manner adapted to aid in snaring a ball striking the palm of the glove.

In order to reinforce the glove body at points adjacent to the outer ends of the fingers and to stay the finger stalls to each other at points adjacent to their outer ends whereby the impact arising when a ball strikes the alm of the glove will cause spreading of the fingers at their bases and a converging of the fingers at their ends, the invention contemplates the provision of a lace or tie member 23 arranged to connect the respective finger stalls and the thumb stall in series in a manner which will now be described. Attaching strips or ears 24 having eyelets 25 through which the lace 23 may extend are provided, there being one of the attaching strips for each of the finger stalls 2, 3 and 4 and two of the attaching strips for the front or first finger 5. The" attaching strips 24 for the finger stalls 2, 3 and 4 are arranged to extend outwardly from the backs of the finger stalls along the longitudinal median lines of the latter and at points where the outermost joint of the fingers will be disposed. The attaching strips 24 may be secured to the finger stalls 2, 3 and at at the' seams between adjacent sections of the finger backs as indicated at 26 in Figure 2. One of the attaching strips for the front finger 5 is secured along the longitudinal median line of the latter between the sections of the finger back in the same manner as the attaching strips for the fingers 2, 3 and 4 are secured to the latter. The second attaching strip for the front finger 5 is secured to the latter at the seam between the outer edge of the section 15 of the finger back and the finger front 5, that is, at the side of the finger 5 adjacent to the thumb 6. Eyelets 27 and 28 respectively are provided in the thumb piece 1 1 at opposite sides of the longitudinal seam 29 which joins the lateral edges of the thumb piece to one another, the eyelets 27 and 28 being located adjacent to the outer end of the thumb.

From the foregoing description of the various parts of the device, the operation thereof may be readily understood. The lace 23 is extended through the eyelets of the respective attaching ears 24 in sequence, beginning with the attaching ear carried by the fourth finger and is extended through the eyelets 28 and 27 of the thumb piece. The one end of the lace is held against passage through the eyelet of the attaching ear carried by the fourth finger, as by being provided with a knot 30. The free end portion of the lace is threaded through the eyelets of a desired number of the fingers, beginning with the eyelet on the front or first finger and the portion of the lace extending through the respective eyelets is adjusted in length to adjust the position of the finger stalls and thumb stall in respect to one another, a knot 31 being formed at the inner end of the adjacent eyelet and to thus maintain the desired adjustment of the finger stalls and thumb stall in respect to one another.

When a ball strikes the palm of the glove body at the juncture of the palm and the thumb stall and first finger stall, the base portions of the finger stalls will give or spread somewhat while the outer end portions of the fingers and the thumb will be held against spreading by the lace 23, whereby a relatively deep pocket conforming substantially to the contour of the ball will be formed in the glove body, thus tending to hold the ball in the glove. Moreover, the fingers and the thumb will be stayed to one another, thus precluding the bending back of any one of the fingers or the spreading of adjacent fingers or the forefinger and thumb to an extent sufficient to cause injury to the fingers of the hand of a wearer or to permit the ball to slip between adjacent fingers or I me ian the forefinger and thumb of the glove. It will be apparent that a glove equipped with the invention will retain its shape for a relatively lon time in the service for which itis intende since the relatively movable parts of the glove are efi'ectually stayed to one another and reinforced.

Obviously, the invention is susceptible of embodiment in forms other than that illustrated in the accompanying drawing and I therefore consider as my own all modifications and adaptations of'the form of the device herein disclosed which fairly fall within the scope of the a pended claims.

Having thus descri ed the invention, what I claim 1s:' f
