JAMES ROSGOOD 8: CO BOSTON UNITED STATES PATENT OEEIoE.
GEORGE F. STEVENS, OF SOHUYLER, NEBRASKA.
IMPROVEMENT IN PORTABLE FE NCES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 183,226, dated October 10, 1876; application filed March 13, 1876.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE F. STEVENS, of Schuyler, in the county of Colfax and State of Nebraska, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Portable Fences, of which the following is a specification:
Figure 1 represents a portion of my improved fence. Fig. 2 is a Vertical section of the same, taken through the line 00 00, Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a detail section taken through the line y y, Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a detail view of one of the clamping-blocks.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
The object of this .invention is to furnish an improved portable fence, the panels of which shall be so connected that the fence may be conveniently put up and taken down, and which, when put up, shall form a firm and strong fence.
The invention consists in the rods, bent near their alternate ends at right angles, and having eyes formed in said bent ends, in combination with the ends of the panels; in the grooved clamping-blocks, in combination with the rods and the panels; in the combination of the bolts with the eyes of the upper bends of the rods and with the panels.
A are the panels, which are formed by connecting five-more or less-horizontal boards at their ends with vertical cross-bars, and in their middle parts by cross-bars inclined toward each other. The panels may be formed in any other convenient manner. To the sides of the panels A, near each end, is attached a rod, B, which is bent at right angles near one end, the bent end I) being of such a length as to reach to the rod B of the adjacent panel. The rods B, at the contiguous ends of the adjacent panels, are bent at their alternate ends, and the ends of the bent parts b have eyes formed in them to receive the straight ends of the adjacent rods, as shown in Fig. 1. The straight ends of the rods B that point downward are made long, so as to enter the ground to a sufficient depth to hold the fence in the position in which it is placed. 0 are blocks which have a right-angled groove formed in their under sides to receive and fit upon the angles of the rods B, and which are secured to the panels A by bolts. D are blocks which have straight grooves formed upon their under sides to receive and fit upon the straight parts of the rods B. The rods B are thus securely clamped to the panels A. The eyes of the upper bends b are kept from being raised from the straight ends of the adjacent rods by bolts E, secured to the panels by keepers, and the ends of which are pushed forward above the eyes of the bends b. F are rods or stakes, with hooked heads to hook upon the lower ends I), and. which are driven into the ground at an angle of about forty'five degrees, (45
For greater security and strength the fence should be made zigzag, the panels meeting each other at a greater or less angle, as may be desired.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. The rods B, bent'near their alternate ends at right angles, and having eyes formed in said bent ends b, in combination with the ends of the panels A, substantially as herein shown and described.
2. The grooved clamping-blocks O D, in combination with the rods B and the panels A, substantially as herein shown and described.
3. The combination of the bolts E with the eyes of the upper bends b of the rods B, and with the panels A, substantially as herein shown and described.
GEORGE F. STEVENS.
