Description
E. D. ROSEMAN. Fence-Post.
No. 202,875. Patented April 23,1878.
PIC-5.2..
WITNESSES fliyVEJv'ToR;
attz UNITED STATES PATENT OEEIoE.
EDWARD D. ROSEMAN, OF MOUNT PLEASANT, IOWA, ASSIGNOR OF ONE HALF HIS RIGHT TO CYRUS B. MINSHALL, OF SAME PLACE.
IMPROVEMENT IN FENCE-POSTS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 202,875, dated April 23, 1878; application filed March 28, 1878.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, E. D. ROSEMAN, of Mount Pleasant, in the county of Henry and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fence Posts; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification, and in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved fence-post. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the same, the cap being removed; and Fig. 3 is a side View.
Similar letters of reference denote corresponding parts in all the figures.
This invention relates to certain improvements in metallic fence-posts, as I shall now proceed more fully to describe, with reference to the drawings, in which- A is the body of my improved fence-post, which consists simply of a flat metallic plate, preferably iron, having a pointed end, a, so as to be readily driven into the ground. Near the lower end of the plate or post A is bolted another plate, B, projecting on both sides, so as to form wings b b, as shown. Still another plate, 0, is bolted upon post A at c, which point is so located that when the post is driven the plate 0 shall also enter the ground. The wings d d of plate 0 are bent at right angles to the post.
The post A is provided with a series of perforations, e e, for the insertion of staples f j, which hold the fence-wire in position. When the post A is driven, the plates B O also enter the ground, thus serving to prevent the post from swaying or falling backward or forward.
The post is prevented from being laterally displaced by the bent wings d d of plate 0.
At the corners of a fence, or at other places where it is desirable or necessary to brace the posts, I attach at the upper end of the post a rod, 9, the lower end of which is connected to a stake or brace, D, which is driven into the ground at some distance from the post, and which may be made of wood, metal, or any other suitable material. When this bracing device is used, I prefer to cover the top or head of the post with an ornamental cap, G.
My improved fence-post may be manufactured at a very small cost, and, owing to the plates B C, it cannot easily be displaced when driven in the ground.
Having thus described my invention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States- 1. As an improvement in metallic fenceposts the flat post A, having plates B 0, provided with projecting wings I) d, the wings d of plate 0 being bent at right angles to the post, substantially as described, for the purpose herein set forth.
2. The combination, with the fence -post constructed as herein described, of the rod g, stake D, and cap G, substantially as and for the purpose herein set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto affixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
EDWARD D. ROSEMAN.
