Description
(No Model.)
F. L. SMITH 8v B. A. WELLS;
. FENCE. No. 245,234. Patented Aug. 2, 1881.
%Hllmllllll WITNESSES INVENTORS I UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
FRANK L. SMITH AND BENJAMIN A. WELLS, OF JACKSON, MICHIGAN.
FENCE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 245,234, dated August 2, 1881.
Application filed April 9, 1881.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, FRANK L. SMITH and BENJAMIN A. WELLS, citizens of the United States, resident at Jackson, in the State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fences; and we do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters or figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
Figure 1 is a perspective iew of a fencepanel embodying our improvements. Fig. 2 is an elevation of one of the posts, showing the brace and panels; and Fig. 3 is a detail view of the brace and post.
This invention relates to improvements in fences.
The invention consists in the construction of the posts and the means of securing the panels thereto, as hereinafter set forth, and particularly pointed out in the claim.
In the annexed drawings, A represents the posts, made each of a flat bar of metal. The bottom a is twisted, as shown, like an anger. Just above this point is secured the brace B,
(N0 model.)
which is bent about the post and riveted thereto, and its ends b I) turned out at right angles. When driven in the ground this twisted point and the brace hold the post firm.
For securing panels of wood the post is provided with a pair of hooked catches, O O, pivoted on opposite sides thereof, and having their heads turned toward each other. The panels are slipped between these catches, and they are hooked over the former, holding them in place. For wire only one catch is used, and a notch, w, is cut in the edge of the post. In using wire, instead of using a pivoted catch, the body of the notch may be made larger than the mouth and a wedge be driven in.
We claim- In a fence, the post A, provided with the hooked catches G O, pivoted thereto, in combination with the rails or boards which form the panels, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
In testimony whereof we affix our signatures in presence of two witnesses.
FRANK L. SMITH. BENJAMIN A. WELLS.
