Description
J. E. BRYAN.
REIN-HOLDER.
No.183120. Patented ot.1o.1s7s.
- JAMES R OSGOOD & CC- BOSTCN 'UNITED 4STATES PATENT OFFICE..
. JAMES E. BRYAN, OF HUMBOLDT, KANSAS.
IMPROVEMENT IN REIN-HOLDERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. l 83,120, dated October 10, 1876; application filed July 15, 1876.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, JAMES E. BRYAN, of Humboldt, inA the county of Allen and State of Kansas, have invented a new and valuable Improvement in Bein-Holder; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, and to the letters and ligures of reference marked thereon.
Figure 1 of the drawings is a representation of a central vertical section, and Fig. 2 is a plan View thereof. Fig. 3 is a side view, and Fig. 4 is a transverse vertical sectional view. Fig. 5 is a horizontal sectional view of the same.
This invention relates to reinholders; and it consists in the devices and combinations hereinafter particularly described.
ln the annexed drawings, A designates a bed-plate, perforated at one end at a a, and slotted at one or both ends longitudinally at a c'. This bed-plate may be attached to the front of the dash-board, either vertically or horizontally, and the slots a a. enable it to be adjusted either way in the direction of its length Without removing the fastening bolts or screws from that end. On the upper or outer face of plate A is cast, or otherwise rigidly secured, an oii'set or auxiliary plate, A1, which is recessed longitudinally at A2, as shown, to receive a clamping-arm, hereinafter described. On the rear of said offset or auxiliary plate A1 is rigidly secured a vertical back plate, B1, bent at right angles to itself, so as to form not only the back, but also the top B2 of the casing B. To the under side of top plate 1?2 is secured one end of a ilat spring, C, which operates to force down (by its free end) the forward part of the pivoted portion of said casing, which consists of the front B3, the sides B4 B, and the bottom B5, all of which are cast in one piece, or otherwise rigidly connected.
The sides B4 B4 are provided with extensions below the bottom B5, which inclose and protect the sides of odset or auxiliary bedplate A1. They are also connected in front by a cross-piece, b1, which sets into recesses b2 in the forward end of top plate B2.
Back plate B1 is provided with a square perforation, b3, which receives a tenon, b4, on the rear end of bottom plate B5, and allows play thereto. The rear ends of side plates B4 B4 extend sufficiently to embrace the sides of the back plate B1, and are pivoted thereto by a pivot-bolt, b5, which passes through all three of said plates, as also through the tenon b4. Underneath bottom plate B5 is rigidly attached a longitudinal clamp-bar, G2, provided with a rigid fronttooth, G1. To said bar and to front plate B3 is rigidly attached a handle, D. The recess A2 in auxiliary bed-plate Al is deeper than suflces to receive clamp-arm C2, and deep enough to receive tooth G1.
The operation is as follows: The clamp-arm C2, with the attached pivoted portion ot the casing B, is raised by means of handle D, so as to allow the reins to be slipped in transversely. The handle then being released, the spring C operates to force the clamp-arm C2 tightly down upon said reins, which are thereby forced into recess A2, and there securely held, while the tooth C1 prevents their lateral displacement.
Various slight moditications may be made without departing from the spirit of my invention. For instance, both ends of the bedplate may be provided with perforations for attachment to wood, or both slotted, so as to receive straps for attachment to leather. Again, the pivoting may be through lugs cast on or otherwise attached to the casing, or by means oi' trunnions, or in any other known manner.
The bottom of the bed-plate may be made convex instead of flat, or may be given any other configuration desired.
Both ends of the bed-plate should be provided with slots, so as to make the device adaptable to attachment to either leather or wood.
The device as a whole may be employed not only as a rein-holder, but wherever it is desirable to clamp or tightly hold a line of any sort, or, indeed, any thin substance.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The combination of the recessed plate A1 with the hinged clamp C102, pivoted plates B3 B4, rigid plates B1 B2, and spring C, sub In testimony that I claim the above I have stantially as described, and for the purpose hereunto subscribed my name in the presence 1 set forth. of two Witnesses. I 2. The combination of rigid back plate B1 JAS. E. BRYAN.
