Description
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM H. BUTLER, OF DES MOINES, IOWA.
IMPROVEMENT IN FLOWER-STANDS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 182,991, dated October 10, 1876; application filed July 3, 1876.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WM. H. BUTLER, of Des Moines, in the county of Polk and State of Iowa, have invented certain Improvements in Flower-Stands, of which the following is a specification My design in this improvement is to supply flower-stands, using an upright standard and brackets, with a cheaper, less complicated, and more convenient, as well as graceful, device for locking the brackets to the standard at any point desired, which will permit of its elevation and depression, as well as being revolved around the standard.
The standard A, which supports the bracket B, should be round, and of suitable size and length, having slight grooves a a or turned at suitable distances apart to receive the projections or ribs 12 b on the inner surface of the hub of the bracket B, which is made to surround the standard A. The hole through the hub of the bracket B is somewhat larger than the standard A, and small projections or ribs 12 b are on the inside of the hub, the ribs making nearly one-third circuit of the hub of the bracket B. These ribs are located one at the back near the top, and one in front near the bottom of the hub of the bracket B, and fit in the grooves a a, a, on the standard A, whereby the leverage of the bracket B looks it firmly to the standard A, and at the same time admits of its being freely revolved about the standard A, the friction being on the ribs 1) b.
The lower back portion of the hub of the bracket B is cut away or enlarged, so that the front end of the bracket B can be raised slightly, thereby freeing the ribs 1) b from the grooves a a 0., allowing the bracket B to be raised or lowered to another set of grooves.
The bracket B is made with two stands, 0 c, for flower-pots. The one nearest the hub of the bracket is raised above the other, so as to leave its view unobstructed by the one in front.
I make the bracket A with projecting parts, provided with sockets to receive the stems of the stands or cups C. These stems are firmly secured to the cups, and lit loosely in the sockets in the brackets, so that the cups will turn around to bring either side of the flower-pot to the room. The cup can also be readily removed for cleaning, &c.
Having described my improvement, I claim as my invention The grooved standard, in combination with a bracket having an inner ribbed hub, substantially as and for the purpose hereinbefore set forth.
WM. H. BUTLER.
