Description
S. BALDWIN.
TAG-FASTENERS.
Patented Oct. 10, 1876.

'C BOSTCN .LAMES F\ OSGOOD Pk UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICEe SILAS BALDWIN, OF TOLEDO, OHIO.
IMPROVEMENT IN TAG-FASTENERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. [82.987, dated October 10, 1876; application iiled April 25, 1876.
To all whom it may concern: i
Be it known that I, SILAS BALDWIN, of Toledo, in the county of Lucas and State of Ohio, have invented a new and Improved Tag for merchants7 and shippers use 5 and I hereby declare that the following` is a full and exact description thereof, reference being had Io the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
My invention relates to an improvement in fasteners for papers or tags; and consists in a rass or other exible metallic blank, which is provided with short reverse-curved extremities, to allow of its ready insertion through the papers or tags to be secured, and the clinching of one end of saine on the opposite side of said papers or tag, the other end serving as a means of attachment to goods or articles of any description.
In the drawings, Figure l represents the fastener as applied to a tag, one end beinginserted through same and clinched, the other end suitably bent to form a hook. Fig. 2 isa back view, showing the clinching. Fig. 3 represents the fastener as applied to a tag, both ends being inserted through the same and clinched on the opposite side. Fig. 4 is a back view of same, showing the clinching.
T is the tag, which is secured by the fastener f, having the extremities a b.
It is apparent that the fastener may be attached to the tag by inserting both its ends through same and clinching them, as shown in Figs. 3 and 4, without departing from the spirit of my invention.
The fastener may be of sufficient strength and stiffness to be capable of being forced through the tag or papers, or slits may be cut in the tags in any suitable manner, and the fastener inserted through same and then clinched, as desired.
I am aware that fasteners have been made of rhomboidal-shaped metal blanks, and so constructed that when inserted through papers or other material the pointed ends are so bent as to overlap each other; but such a construction forms no part of my invention.
My fastener, as hereinbefore described, forms a neat and durable article, easily attached or detached, and the same constitutes a substantial improvement in the art.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The combination, with the tag T, of the metallic fastener f, the latter constructed with a short reverse bend, b, clinched to the lower portion ofthe tag, and provided with the open hook a., curved over the upper extremity ot' the tag, whereby same may be readily removed from or re-attached to goods, substantially as and for the purpose described.
SILAS BALDWIN.
