The operating mechanism for opening and closing the window comprises in general a lever arm 24 which is terminally slotted as shown at 25 toreceive the pivot pin 26 ofa *connecting link 27. The connecting link is terminally equipped with an eye 28 which is. pivoted to the connecting link as shown at 29 and encircles a guide rod30, the ends of which are fixedly secured preferably by screws 31 to t e lower horizontal rail of the casement window sash. V
When the pivot pin 26 of the connecting link is disposed at the inner end of the slot 25 in the lever armthe link extends-in align? ment with the lever arm as best shown 111 Figure 1 and' is-detachably secured lnithis positionby means of a catch 32 which is piv oted on the lever arm as shown at 33, and is terminally equipped with a lip' 34 as best shown in Figure 6, which lip engagesinregis tering slots formed in the lever arm and connecting link.
The lever arm 24 1S operated by means of an operating lever 35 which is operatively connected to the lever arm as will'hereinafter be fully described. lVhen the operating lever 35 is rocked transversely ofvthe window sill the lever arm 24 and'connec'ting link 27 will be rocked to the position shown in dotted lines'in Figure 1, thereby sliding the eye 28 longitudinally of the guide rod and swingingthe window to full open position. Should it be desired to reverse the window to the position shown in Figure2 it is'necessaryto disengage the catch 32 and move the connecting link 27 outwardly so that the pivot pin 26' thereoffis disposed at the outerend of the slot 25. r
The above described locking latches 20 of both the upper and lower hinges are first releasedto permit of the leaves of the hinges opening. The connecting link is now shoved outwardly on'the lever arm until the pivot pm 26 thereof engages in'the outer end ofthe slot Thereupon the operating lever 35 maybe rocked 1n thereverse direction from that used to open the window, and during this movement best shown in Figure 2,

Figures 3, 4 and 5 isterminally equipped with teeth 40 adapted to engage between the teeth The fork 39 is pivoted on the base plate by a pivot pin 42 and is pressed. downwardly by a helical spring 43 which surrounds the pivot pin and is confinedqbetween the, fork and a cap or cover plate 44 which is of the general shape shown in Figure 1 and houses the fork and is mounted on the pivot pin 42 to turn thereon as aiiiiit with the fork. The fork is provided at its rear end with lips 45 to receive the end of the above mentioned oper- 'ating lever 35. When the operating lever 35 is depressed obviously the lever will serve to tilt the forkon the pivot pin 42 and disengage the teeth 40 thereof from between the'arcuate rackteeth 41 on the-base plate 27 as best shown in Figure 5. The lever 35 isnow free to be rocked to open or close the window and upon thelever being released. thespring 43' automatically depresses the fork 39 and engages the teeth thereof between adjoining teeth of the arcuate rack whereby are locked againstmovement.

By referring to Figure 3 it will be seen that the operating lever arm 2'? is secured by screws 48 in a socket member 49which is secured as shown in Figures 4 and 5 to the cover plate 44' by means of a screw: 50. The socket member is formed integral with a'plate 51 which is "provided with an opening 'to pivotally receive the pivot pin 42 above described and extends'underneath the above described fork 39 to the outer 'end of the cover plate where it issec-uredto the latter by means of the pin 47 above described and moves as a unit with the cover'plate 7 It will thus be obvious that the cover plate 44,socket member 49, plate 51 integral therewith, and the fork 39 are: all moved asa unit on the pivot 42 when --the-=lever- :35 is shiftedlaterally. It will. also be obvious thatthe fork 39 has verticalmovement against the pressure of the spring 43 whenithe lever 35 is depressedto idisengagethelocking teeth of the fork. The spring'depresses said fork to.-
engage said teeth when the lever is released.
It will be observed from the above desc'ripti on that the easement window opening mech anism will operate to automatically lock the window in full open,in closed, or in oblique intermediate open positions, or in reversed position. j y i 1 It will be further observed that thelocleing mechanismjis operated frominside the 7 window and is positive in action and that furthermore, the parts for the most part are housed within the casing constituted by the base plate 37 and cover plate 44' which parts may be easily and quickly attached to the window sill without alterations thereof.
It will be pointed outthat my improved device as above described is equally applicable to steel casement windows as well as wood.
