and use the same.
The present invention relates to shutter mountings, and has for an object to provide improved shutter mountings whereby the shutters may be moved to assume a position parallel and spaced from the indow frame to intercept the view into the room, and at the same time provide ventilating channels between the frame and the shutters.
Another object of the present invention is to provide improved shutter mountings whereby the shutters may be secured to swing in a horizontal plane, in opening and closing the same, in the usual manner; or the shutters may be released and permitted to move to the ventilating position above indicated.
A further object of the invention resides in the provision of suitable mechanism for maintaining the shutters in the various positions to which the same may be adjusted.
It is within the contemplation of the invention to provide shutter mountings. of the above character, employed in conjunction with a window frame provided with a pocket, into which the sliding sashes may be moved to render the opening in the frame unobstructed and secure the best ventilating results.
lVith these and other objects in view the invention consists in the novel details of construction and combinations of parts more fully hereinafter disclosed and particularly pointed out in the claim.
In the accompanying drawings forming a part of this application, and in which similar reference symbols indicate corresponding parts in the several views: Figure 1 is an elevational view of the outside of a window frame showing the shutters in closed position. Fig. 2 is a view similar to Fig. 1, and showing the shutters in open position. Fig. 3 is a similar view to Fig. 1, and illustrating the shutters 1n one position for ventilation. Fig. at is an elevation of a window frame from the interior, and
showing the shutters arranged in spaced relation therefrom. Fig. 5 is a vertical sectional view of a window frame showing the shutters in the position occupied by the same in Fig. 4-. Fig. 6 is a horizontal sectional view taken through the center of the shutters, and showing same in closed position; and Fig. 7 is a similar View showing the shutters in the position occupied by the same in Fig. 4. j
Referring more particularly to the drawing, 1 designates a window frame constructed with a pocket or recess 2, closed by the hinged sill 3, and into which the upper and lower sliding sashes 4 and 5 may be moved to leave the opening in the win dow frame unobstructed, as will be under stood.
The shutters 6 and 7 are supported by mountings constructed each of a shankS, and a pair of leaves 9 and 10 pivoted to opposite ends thereof and secured, respectively, to the window frame 1 and one of the shutters. The pivot joint, connecting the shank S and the leaf 9, is preferably constructed to permit disengagement of the parts when the shutter is raised vertically, as is usual in demounting shutters from hinges at present ordinarily employed. It will be understood that the shutters may be swung horizontally from closed position, as indicated in Fig. 1, to open position, as shown in Fig. 2, and the same may be secured in closed position by means of the sliding bolt 11, arranged to project from one shutter and engage a keeper 12 carried by the other shutter.
The shutters are further arranged to be moved about the pivotal connections provided between the outer leaves 10 and the respective shanks 8 of the mountings, to assume the position shown in Fig. 3, in which the shutters are arranged in V relation. In this position one of the shutters is arranged to encounter air currents and direct the same into the room, whereby to induce adraft therein and permit the foul air to be forced through the opening made by the other shutter.
The shutters may be moved to a greater degree about the outer pivotal connection to the position shown in Fig. 4:, where the same are arranged directly in front of the window opening and in spaced and parallel relation thereto. A pivoted hook 13 provides for maintaining the shutters in this 7 position, where the latter form, with the bill and arranged to project into a recess 116 formed in the body of the shutter.
A catch 17 carried by a sliding block 18, engages the bill 15 on the finger 14 and prevents the shutter pivoting about the leaf 10. The vbloclc 18 is yieldingly held in operative position by means of a spring 19, and the catch 17 is beveled, as indicated at 20, to encounter the finger 14, whereby the latter may more the block 18 against the action of the spring 19 and permit the finger to enter the recess 16. The block 18 is movable to disengage the finger 1% by means of a rod '21 projecting from the block through a slotted plate 23, and the rod 21 is provided with v a knob 22 for conveniently manipulating I the same. 1
It will be understood that the catches :17 are normally in engagement with the fingers 14;, whereby relative movement of the shutters about the shanks 8 is prevented, and
the shutters swing in the ordinary manner to open and close the same about the inner leaves When it is desired to adjust the shutters to either of the positions shown in Figs. 3 and at, the. sliding blocks 18 are retracted against the action of the springs 19 by manipulating the knobs 22. This action operates to release the fingers 14 and permits the shutters to be revolved about the shanks 8 of the m0untings, and the same can thereupon be made to assume the desired position. Each of the shanks.8,. of the-central mountings, is provided withv .a stop 2 against. which each outer leaflO abuts when the shutters are'in the position shown to advantage in Fig. 7.
It is obvious-that those skilled :in. the art may vary the details of construction and ar+ rangement of parts withoutdeparting. from a the spirit-of my invention, and therefore I do not wish to-be-limited to suohfeatures except as may be required by the claim.
I claim;
The combination with a window. frame, of a pair of shutters for closing the opening: therein, andv mountings; for holding said shutters mend-abutting relation spaced and parallel from said window frame to provide therewith ventilating channels, substantially;
as described.
In testimony whereof, I affixmy-"slgn'ature, in presenceof tWo witnesses-L GUS POWERS.
