Description
Oct. 20, 1931.; F. c; RUPPEL RADIATOR FOR MOTOR VEHICLES Filed, March 10. 1928 INVENTOR BY f'rvjgnb% (T %a6 Patented Oct. 20, 1931 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE FREDERICK C. RUPPEL, F GRAND RAPIDS, MICHIGAN, ASSIGNOR TO W. 3. JARVIS COM PANY, OF GRAND RAPIDS, MICHIGAN RADIATOR FOR MOTOR VEHICLES Application filed March 10; 1928. Serial No. 260,757.
The main objects of this invention are: First, to provide an improved radiator for automobiles and the like with a filling opening and closure in which the filling opening is readily accessible, and at the same time a structure which is compact, and novel and attractive in appearance.
Second, to provide a structure of this class in which various ornamental features may be readily embodied and also is well adapted to display the name plate or other emblem of the vehicle.
Objects pertaining to details and economies of my invention will definitely appear from the description to follow. The invention is defined in the claims.
A structure embodying the features of my invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which:
Fig. 1 is a front perspective view of a structure embodying the features of my invention, the radiator being indicated by dotted lines,
Fig. 2 is a detail vertical central section r on a linecorresponding to line 22 of Fig. 1. 1
Fig. 8 isa detail vertical section corresponding to that of Fig. 2 of a modified form of my invention.
Fig. 4 is a detail vertical section showing another modification of my invention.
modification in the structure and illustrating the adaptability thereof to different ornamentations.
Referring to the drawings, 1 represents a radiator and 2 the shell thereof. The radiator shell is provided with an opening 3 in the top thereof through which the filling neck 4 of the radiator projects, this neck being externally threaded in the embodiments illustrated.
The cap plate 5 has an opening 6 therein to receive the radiator neck, the plate being flat and resting upon the top of the shell. The annular nut 7 threaded upon the neck clamps the plate in position. The cap 8 is internally chambered to enclose this retaining nut and has an internally threaded flange 9 engaging the neck above the retaining nut. This cap closes against the top of the cap plate.
so The cap plate in the embodiment shown in I bodiment in various designs.
Fig. 5 is a detail section showing a further 10 overlapping the front of the radiator shell and is provided with a name-plate space 11.
In the embodiment shown in Figs. 1 to4 an ornamental projection 12 is provided above the name-plate.
In the embodiment shown in Fig. 3 the retaining nut 7 is omitted and the ca plate is retained by a stud screw 13 arrange through the front of the radiator shell and provided 1 with a nut 14.
In the embodiment shown in Fig. 4 the cap plate '15 is provided with integral lugs 16 arranged through holes 17in the top of the shell and oflset or riveted therein.
In the embodiment shown in Fig. 5 the cap 'plate118 has a Winged ornament 19 at the front end thereof. 7
My improvements are well adapted for emreinforces the radiator shell around the opening therein through which the filler neck'projects so that the cap may be screwed down upon the shell. It also serves as a support- ;ing'means for the name plate, emblem or trademark of the vehicle.
I hate not attempted to illustrate or describe various other modifications or adaptations which are possible as it is believed that the disclosuremade will enable those skilled in the art to embody or adapt my improvements as desired.
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. The combination with a radiator shell having an opening in the top thereof, a radiator disposed within said shell and having a threaded filling neck projecting through said opening therein, a fiat cap plate mounted on said shell and having an opening therein fitting said neck, said cap plate having an integral name plate member depending from its front edge and overlapping the front of the shell, a retaining nut threaded upon said neck to clamp said cap plate upon said shell, and a chambered cap threaded upon said neck above said retaining nut to enclose the same The cap plate cap plate.
