Application February 27,
11 Claims.
The main object of this invention is to provide an improved radiator for automobiles in which an effective closure is provided for the filling opening and at the same time one which may be quickly opened and is distinctive and attractive in appearance.
Objects pertaining to details and economies of my invention will definitely appear from the description to follow. The invention is defined in the claims.
A structure embodying the features of my invention is clearly illustrated in the accompany ing drawing forming a part of this application, in which:
Fig. 1 is a fragmentary view of my improved radiator partially in central vertical section.
Fig. 2 is a fragmentary view of a modified form of my invention partially in central vertical section.
In the accompanying drawing the radiator proper 1 is arranged within a shell 2. The radiator is provided with a filling neck 3 ha"- ing an inwardly projecting flange 4 at its upper end providing a valve seat. The top of this neck is below the top 5 of the radiator shell which has an opening 6 therein above the filling opening of the radiator, affording access thereto. This opening preferably extends into the front wall of the radiator shell at 7 so that free access is provided to the filling opening. I provide a combined closure member and ornament 8 which in the preferred embodiment shown in Fig. 1 is hinged at 9 to the upwardly projecting car 10 on the shell, the pivot being located at the rear of the opening. This closure is of a general angular form having a front flanged portion 11 overlapping and closing against the front wall 12 of the radiator.
On the front wall 12 is an upwardly curved spring latch 13, the flange part 14 of the closure having an opening 15 to receive this latch. The bottom edge lfi of the opening constitutes a keeper coacting with the latch to not only hold the closure in closed position but to exert a camming action, drawing the closure do 'n ward. The closure is designed as an ornan t for the radiator, the particular closure illustrated representing a falcon or bird of prey.
The neck portion 81 serves as a handpicee for manipulating the closure. In closing it is only necessary to swing the closure downwardly and on a forward and upward pull the spring ilatch yields to permit opening. The closure member carries a valve or closure for the radia- 1928. Serial No. 257,437
tor filling opening, this in the embodiment illustrated consisting of a supporting disk 1'7 mounted on the under side of the closure by means of the screw 18 and a hollow spherically curved valve member 19 formed of rubber, the edges of the valve member being molded upon or otherwise secured to the edges of the supporting disl: 17.
A hole 20 is provided in the bottom of the valve member to afford access to the head of the screw 18.
With this arrangement an eifective closure is provided, the valve member readily adapting itself to the valve seat around the filler opening and the necessity for great care in forming, assembling and alining the parts is not required.
In the modification shown in Fig. 2 the pivot ear 21 is supported in substantially the same relation relative to the radiator shell as the ear 10, but is carried by a ring threaded upon the neck of the radiator which is externally threaded to receive it.
In this embodiment a pivoted latch 23 mounted a 24 on the depending portion of the closure 11 .ber, the finger piec 25 of the latch projectin iwardly therefrom. A keeper 25 deal on the supporting ring 22. A spring 27 noes the latch to engaging position.
My improvements are readily adapted to different ornamental designs, that is, the ornamay be very considerably varied ill avoid upward projections breaking the genv contour radiator.
I have illustrated and described my improve rents in two practical emhodi. not attempted to illustrate describe other embodiments as I is this disclosure will enable those sl n the art embody or adapt my may be desired.
