CAP FOR RADIATO'R NECKS AND THE LIKE 2 Sheets-Sheet 1 Filed March 14 1932 INVENTOR. 4cm; /7 Jaw/s ATTORNEYS Feb. 21, 1933. L JARVIS 1,898,055
CAP FOR RADIATOR NECKS AND THE LIKE Filed March 14, 1932 2 Sheets-Sheet 2 III-lift INENTOR.
ATTORNEYS Patented Feb. 21, 1933 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE LEWIS A. JARVIS, OF GRAND RAPIDS, MICHIGAN, ASSIGNOR T W. B. JARVIS COMPANY, OF GRAND RAPIDS, MICHIGAN CAP FOR RADIATOR NECKS AND THE LIKE Application filed March 14, 1932. Serial No. 598,747.
The main objects of this invention are: First, to provide an improved cap for radiators, gasoline tanks and the like which may be quickly opened and closed and when closed provides an edective seal.
Second, to provide a cap or closure of this type which may be readily applied to standard types of motor vehicles.
Third, to provide a cap or closure of this type in which the parts are so assembled that they are not likely to fall or drop into the radiator or tank on which the cap is used.
Objects relating to details and economies of my invention will appear from the description to follow. The invention is defined and pointed out in the claims.
A structure which is a preferred embodiment of my invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which:
Fig. l is a vertical section of a radiator cap embodying the features of my invention, taken on line 11 of Fig. 2, the cover being closed.
Fig. 2 is a'perspective view, showing the cover in its open position.
Fig. 3 is a detail section of the cover.
Fig. 4 is a perspective view of the hinge member.
' Fig. 5 is a perspective view of the gasket backing disk.
Fig. 6 is a perspective view of the gasket.
Fig. 7 is a perspective view of the screw and gasket support assembly, and i Fig. 8 is a fragmentary detail section of the body member, showing the set screw for securing the body member to the neck of a container such as a radiator.
In the accompanying drawings, 1 represents a radiator neck of the externally threaded type, but it is desired to point out that my improvements are readily adapted for radiators or the necks of tanks of the bayonet type. I have not, however, shown such an adaptation as joints of that type are well known in the art.
The end 2 of the neck 1 constitutes a seat for'the gasket 3 which is supported by'the downwardly facing shoulder 4 of the closure body member 5. A set screw 6 is provided 50 for locking the body member upon the this support being stepped or shouldered to threaded neck, the body member being preferably permanently attached to the neck. The same would betrue if a-bayonet'type of joint were provided between the body member and the neck.
The body member is provided with an upwardly facing convexly curved annular gasket seat 8, the gasket 9 being supported for coaction with this gasket seat betweenthe H- resilient closure diskll and the stepped support 10. i I
The gasket itself is preferably of a yielding resilient material although it is yieldingly supported by the resilient closure and an effective seal is provided when it is made of quitehard material such, for example, as fiber. V
'The'support 10 is secured to the cover 12 by means of the screw 13, the head 14 of which is disposed within the support 10. A retaining disk 15 is secured to the support preferably by the rivet 16, this disk having a central tool opening 17 of such diameter as to prevent the screw passingtherethrough,
so that the screw is rotatably secured or 'swiveled to the support.
The cover 12 is provided with an annular stud 18 into which'the reduced portion or smaller portion of the support is engaged,
project into the stud and to support the disk which is arranged on the end of the stud and has a central openingregistering with the stud. The support also has a shoulder which properly'centers the gasket. This assembly 35 also secures the cover to the annular hinge member 20, the opening of which receivesthe stud, the hinge member having a pintle 21 engaging the vertically elongated pivot hole 22 in the pintle ear 23 of the body member. This arrangement permits a limited vertical movement of the cover when it is closed.
The cover is locked in its closed position and clamped upon the gasket 9 by means of the cammed keeper lugs 24 projecting from the body member to coact with the slots 25 in the latching lugs 26 on the depending rim or skirt 27 of the cover. v i
The cover is also provided with internal spaced stops 28 which limit the rotative movement of the cover relative to the body member. The cover is quickly released or locked by a rotative movement thereof, and at the same time provides an effective joint or seal.
The parts are so assembled that there are no small parts to drop into the radiator or tank should they become loosened or detached. The screw, being swivelly attached to the support, is not easily lost and cannot easily drop into the tank, the openings of which are ordinarily of a diameter exceeding the support. The parts are so related thata single screw is all that is required.
I have illustrated and described my improvements in an embodiment which I have found very practical. I'have not attempted to illustrate or describe certain embodiments or adaptations contemplated as, it is believed that this disclosure will enable those skilled in the art to embody or adapt my improvements as may be desired.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is: l
1.
