Mich.
Application October 28. 1929. Serial No. 402,884 r,
v The mainobject of this invention is to provide a closure for radiator necks, oil tanksand the like which maybe quickly'removedand applied, the opening being effectively sealed and the closure being compact and projecting but 5 slightly above the neck on which it is mounted.
A further object is to provide a closure hav ing these advantages which is very simple and economical in its parts and at the same time strong and durable.
Objects pertaining to details and economies of my invention will definitely appear from the description to follow. The invention is defined in the claims.
A structure which embodies the features of my invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which:
Fig. 1 is a fragmentary vertical section on a line corresponding to line 1-1 of Figs. 2 and 5 through a radiator structure embodying the features of my invention.
Fig. 2 is an inverted view of the closure.
Fig. 3 is an inverted view of the closure disk or plate removed from the body of the closure.
Fig. 4 is a plan view of the gasket.
Fig. 5 is a plan view of the radiator neck.
In the embodiment illustrated 1 represents a motor vehicle radiator and 2 the shell. The radiator is provided with a filler neck 3 having an inturned flange 4 at its upper end providing a gasket seat. On the inner edge of the flange I form opposed segmental cammed keepers 5 having stops 6 at corresponding ends thereof.
The shell 2 is provided with an opening adapted to receive the neck 3 and having a flange 7 embracing and spaced from the neck as shown in Fig. l.
The closure comprises a body member 8 which is preferably formed as a die casting and has a depending flange 9 embracing the upper edge of the flange 7 of the shell. This body member does not constitute an actual closure but is an ornamental part adapted also as a hand-piece.
The spring disk 10 constitutes a closure proper and is mounted on a depending stud or boss 11' disposed centrally of the body member 8. This stud 11 has lugs 12 engaging the opening 13 in the closure disk so that the disk is secured against rotation on the stud. The closure disk is crowned somewhat and is provided with an nular corrugations 14.
At its outer edge the closure disk has a downturned flange 15 embracing the neck '3 and centering the closure thereon. A gasket 16 is arranged within this flange to coact with the 5 Claims. (Cl. 220 v flange on the radiator neck which constitutes a gasket seat. 7 p Y .The' latch member 17 is providedwith an opening 18 engaging the lugs and is secured upon the stud bymeans of thescrew 19 threadedinto the stud. ,Aspring washer indicated at 20 is provided forthe screw.
A gasket or packing 21 is arranged on the inner side of the closure disk so that a tight joint is provided between the closure disk and the body member. The latch member is provid- 8 ed with projecting lugs 22 adapted to be engaged with and disengaged from the cammed keepers I 5 by a rotative movement of the closure.
My improved closureis very economical in its parts and the parts are easily assembled. At the 7 ers on the edge thereof, said keepers having stops at corresponding ends thereof, a shell having an opening therein to receive said neck provided with an upwardly projecting flange embracing and spaced from said neck, a closure comprising a body member flanged to embrace said flange on said shell and having a centrally depending stud provided with a lug, a closure disk mounted on said stud and having an opening therein to receive said lug, said closure disk having a downturned flange at its outer edge adapted to receive said neck, a gasket arranged within said flange of said closure disk, there being a packing gasket between said closure disk and said stud, a latch plate arranged in supporting engagement with said closure disk and having an opening therein to receive said lug, said latch plate having \projecting lugs coacting\ with said keepers, and a screw threaded into said stud for clamping the said closure disk and latch member thereto.
2. The combination of a neck having an inturned flange providing a gasket seat, said flange having oppositely disposed cammed keepers on the edge thereof, said keepers having stops at corresponding ends thereof, a closure comprising a body member having a centrally depending stud provided with a lug, a closure disk mounted on said stud and having an opening therein to receive said lug, said closure disk having a downturned flange at its outer edge ber adapted as a hand'piece and having a central depending stud provided with a projecting lug, a closure disk mounted on said stud to engage said lug whereby it is secured to rotate with said body member, said closure disk having a downturned flange at its edge eoacting with said neck, a gasket arranged within said flange, a latch member provided with projecting lugs engageable with said keepers of said neck and having an opening to engage said lug on said stud, and a screw threaded into said body member for retaining said latch member and closure disk in position thereon.
4. In a closure, the combination of a neck having internal keepers, a closure body member adapted as a handpiece and having a central depending stud provided with a projecting lug, a flanged closure disk having annular corrugations mounted on said stud to engage said lug whereby it is secured to rotate with said body member, a latch member provide with projecting lugs engageable with said keepers of said neck and having anopening to engage said lug on said stud, and a screw threaded into said body member for retaining said latch member and closure disk in position thereon.
5. In a closure, the combination of a neck having internal keepers, a chambered body member, a spring closure member mounted at its center within said body member and against relative rotative movement thereto, said closure 'member having a downturned flange at its outer edge engaging said neck, and a latch member provided with lugs coacting with said keepers.
