Description

Sept. 6, 1932. c. A. zARoBsKY CLOSURE Filed June 2l, 1929 In 0 la Zfczf. MMM-ZM@ mmmff Patented Sept. i v6', 1932 UNITED .STATES A PATENT OFFICE- CHARLES AszAEoBsxY, or CLEVELAND, omo, AssIGNoR To THE :EATON MANUFACTUR- ING COMPANY, or CLEVELAND, oHIo, A CORPORATION or omo cLosURE Application mea .Tune 21, 1929. serial No. 372,585.
This invention relates to closure devices, and more particularly to an improved form of closure adapted to be applied to the opening in a vehicle wheel hub, container ller neck or the like. l
An objectvof this invention is to provide an improved form of closure device adapted to be quickly and easily applied to a member l opening, and provided with means adapted to engage said member to releasably lock the closure thereon without requiring relative rotation between the closure and said member. The invention 4may be further briefly sumf marized as consisting in certain novel combinations and arrangements of parts hereinafter describedand Vset out in the appended claim. v
In the sheet of drawing forming a part of this application,
AFigure 1 isa topplan view of my improved form of closure. Figure 2 is a sectional elevation taken on line 2 2 of Fig. 1, showing my closure applied to a member opening.
, Figure 3 is a fragmentary view with parts broken away, showing one of the movable locking members.
Figure lis an end elevational view of the locking member shown in Fig. 3. y Referring now to the drawing for a detailed description of myinvention, I show a closure device comprising a member having' an opening' therein, and a closure adapted position, and vreleasably locked to the mem- -ber without requiring relative rotation bep tween the latter and the closure.
vor a similar tubular In the drawing I show my improvedr form of closure applied to be a vehicle wheely hub, a container filler neck member, having an opening to be closed; This improved form of closure which, invFigure2 is shown applied to the-member opening, comprises a body 11,
'having a portion 12 adaptedy to extend into the member opening. The closure body may be of any desired form of construction, but in this instance, consists of'an inner part 13, which is shaped to form'the extension 12, and an outer part or ing position by means of the member in any angulary a member 10, which may cupies aposition with shell 14 which may as` sume any desired shape. These yparts are secured together by providing the inner part member 10 I provide the extension 12 with..
spaced locking members 19, 20 and 21,`which,
engage the edge of said member surrounding said opening.4 If desired these locking members may all be of the movable type, but` this is not necessary, and in the arrangement shown the member 19 -is formed by pressing outwardly a portion of the side wall of the extension 12 to form a rounded laterally 'ex-l tendinglug.y The locking members 2O and 21 aremade movable relative to the extension 12,
and are constructed in the form of small plungers 22, having rounded end portions which extend laterally through openings formed in the side wall of the extension, for locking engagementwith the edge surrounding the member opening. These plungers are normally held laterally outwardly in lockcoil springs 23. Each spring 1s retained in a housing 24 formed from a. sheet metal stamping and secured to the bottom wall 18 of the inner partA by means of tongues or lugs 25, which extend through this wall and are bent over. The springsv are normally maintained under compression with one end bearing against the `base of a plungerand the opposite end bearling against inwardly bent lugs 26, which are which the portion or, as shown, may be proopening, the portion ofthe extension. 12 ad- 'jacent the laterally `extending lug 19 is firstv inserted into the opening, with the lug 19 Ainwardly of the portion of the member surrounding the opening. .The closure now ocaxis of the member 10, and Vwith the locking members 2O and 21 abutting againstv the edge surrounding the opening and preventing the extension 12 from fully entering the opening.
its axis inclined to the The closure, when pressed inwardly from this position, hinges upon the lug 19, and as the extension 12 enters the opening the locking members 20 and 21 move laterally inwardly G so as to compress the springs 23 and ride over the edff'e of the member surrounding the open` ing. gllVhen the extension 12 has fully entered the member opening, these members or plungers move laterally outwardly andengage the edge surrounding the member opening so as to lock the closure in place. When it is necessary to remove the closure from the member opening the' portion of the closure adjacent the 'mavoble locking plungers 20 may be pried away from the member 10, causing the plungers to move inwardly and ride over the edge of the opening. During this movement the closure pivots about the lug 19 luntil the plungers have passed over the edge of the 20 openingwh ereupon the-closure may be completely removed from the opening. I f It will be seen that in the closure device which I have provided, the closure may be applied to themember opening in any angular 25 position, and that the closure may be applied and releasably locked to the member without requiring relative movement between the parts. It will also be seen that in this arrangement th-e edge of the member surround- 39 ing the opening need not be provided with the cam portions heretofore required for quickly detachable closures.
While I have shown and described the device of my invention in a detailed manner, it
I should be understood, however, that I do not limit myselr` to the precise details shown and described, butl regard my invention as including such changes and modifications as do not l involve a departure from the spirit of thein- 49 vention and the scope of the appended claim.
Having described my invention, I claim: In a closure device the combination of a member havingan opening to be closed and a lip surrounding said opening, a cap having a i sheet metal body provided with a tubular portion removably engaging in said opening, and means carried by said cap for removably retaining said tubular portion in said opening, the last mentioned means comprising 'a .50 locking member on said tubular portion ada ted to Iengage under said lip, a second locking movably disposed in an opening prol vided in the side wall of said tubular portion and adapted to engage under said lip, and
, means housed in said tubular portions for normally urging said second locking member outwardly whereby the latter rides over said lip when said tubularv portion-is moved into or out of said opening, L
In testimony whereof, I hereunto aliix my signature.
