Description

April 28, 1931. F. c. RUPPEL RADIATOR FOR MOTOR VEHICLES Filed March 10, 1928 ATTORNEYS Patented Apr. 28, 1931 UNTTED STATES PATENT OFFICE I?REIDEIRIGK C. RUIPPEL, 9F GRAND RAPIDS, MICHIGAN, ASSIIGNOB TO W. B. JARVIS GUM- PANY, OF GRAN D RAPIDS, MICHIGAN RAIDl'ATOR FUR MOTOR VEHICLES Application filed March 10, 1928. Serial No. 260,758.
The main object of this invention is to provide an improved radiator for automobiles and the like in which the filling opening for the radiator is enclosed within the shell and at the same time is readily accessible through the shell, the opening in the shell being provided with a closure which lies close to the shell and is very attractive in appearance.
A further object is to provide a structure having these advantages which is very economical to produce.
Objects pertaining to details and economies of my invention will definitely appear from the description to follow. The invention is defined in'the claims.
A structure embodying the features of my invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawing forming a part of this application in which:
Fig. 1 is a detail vertical section on a line corresponding to line 11 of Fig. 2 of an automobile radiator embodying the features of my invention.
Fig. 2 is a fragmentary plan view of the structure shown in Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 shows a slightly modified form or embodiment of my invention.
Referring to the drawing, 1 represents a radiator and :2 the shell. The radiator is provided withv a filling neck l disposed within the shell, the upper end of the neck being below the top of the shell. This filling neck is provided with a threaded closure cap 5 which is accessible and removable through the opening 6 in the shell.
The shell is provided with a closure plate 8 having an opening 9 therein registering with the opening 6 in the shell. This plate is secured to the shell by means of the lugs 10 which are inserted through openings in the shell and headed or offset on the inner side thereof.
In the preferred embodiment shown in Figs. 1 and 2 the closure plate is angular in form, having a- .fiange-like depending portion 11 overlapping the front of the shell. At the angle the closure plate is provided with an ornamental projection 12. Below this projection it has a space 13 adapted as a name-plate or to receive the emblem of the vehicle. v
'The closure plate is provided with a cover or closure l i for the opening 9, this closure being secured to the plate by the pintle 15. The hole in the closure 16 with which the pintle is engaged is substantially larger than the pintle so that a limited lateral movement of the closure is permitted on its pintle or pivot. This permits the keeper 1'? on theclosure being alined with a notch like opening 18 in the edge of the opening 9 in the closure plate and a lateral movement imparted thereto, thereby engaging the keeper with the under side of the plate. The closure may be disengaged with a reverse movement.
A spring 19 is mounted on the inner side of the shell to engage this keeper when the closure'is in closed position, thereby frictionally retaining it. shown in Fig. 3 the depending portion 11 is omitted from the closure plate 20.
I have not attempted to illustrate or describe certain other modifications or adaptations which I contemplate as I believe this disclosure will enable those skilled in the art to embody or adapt my improvements as may be desired. however, that the structure may be readily embodied in various ornamental forms or adaptations.
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
l. The combination with a radiator shell having an opening in the top wall thereof, a radiator disposed within said shell and having a filling opening in a plane below the top wall of the shell and accessible through said opening in said shell, a closure plate secured to the top of said shell and having an opening therein alined with said opening in said shell, a closure for said opening in said closure plate hinged thereto, i
the hinge connection for said closure being such as to permit limited lateral movement thereof, said closure having a keeper engaged with said plate by a lateral swinging movement thereof, and a spring coacting with said In the modification I desire to point out, i
keeper for retaining the closure in closed position.
2. The combination with a radiator shell having an opening in the top thereof, a radiator disposed within said shell and having a filling opening accessible through said opening in said shell and provided with a closure removable through said opening, an angular closure plate secured to the top of said shell and having an opening therein alined with said opening in said shell, the vertical arm of said closure plate overlapping the front of the shell and secured thereto, and a closure for said opening in said closure plate carried thereby.
3. The combination with a radiator shell having an opening in the top thereof, a radiator disposed within said shell and having a filling opening accessible through said opening in said shell and provided with a closure, an angular closure plate secured to the top of said shell and having an opening therein alined with said opening in said shell, the vertical arm of said closure plate overlapping the front of the shell and secured thereto, and a closure or said open ing in said closure plate can. ed thereby.
4. The combination with a radiator shell having an opening in the top thereof through which the filiing opening of a radiator housed within the shell is accessible, of a closure plate secured to the top of said shell and having an opening therein alined with said opening in said shell, and a closure for said opening in said closure plate hinged thereto, the hinge connection for said closure being such as to permit limited lateral movement of the closure, said closure having an inwardly projecting keeper in opposed relation to its hinge, said plate being notched to receive said keeper when the keeper is alined therewith whereby said keeper may be passed through the opening and engaged with the plate by a lateral swinging movement of the closure.
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand.
FREDERICK C. RUPPEL.
