UNITE STATES PATENT OFFICE.
BENJAMIN G. MARTIN, OF NEW YORK, N. Y., ASSIGNOR OF THREE-FOURTHS OF HIS RIGHT TO WILLIAM SEWARD, JR., OF NEW YORK CITY.
IMPROVEMENT IN SIGNALS FOR DOORS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 182.208, dated September 12, 1876 application filed February 24, 1876.
To all whom it may concern Be'it known that I, BENJAMIN G. MARTIN, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Annunciator, which invention is fully set forth in the following specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, in which- Figure 1 is a face view of my improved annunciator, showing the manner of applying it to a door. Fig. 2 is a horizontal section thereof in the plane of the line :0 m, Fig. 1.
Similar letters indicate corresponding parts.
My invention relates to an annunciator for state-rooms of steamboats, bath-rooms, and other like places, its object being to show whether or not a room is engaged or occupied through the medium of the door-lock; and the invention consists of a lock-case, in which is arranged a sliding bolt provided with a rack, which engages a pinion having a spindle projecting into the door, on which spindle is arranged a signal device, over which is arranged a plate having an opening through which the signal can be seen, the operation being such that when the bolt is moved to lock the door it operates the pinion, and turns the inscription on the signal-plate, so as to be presented to the opening in the plate which covers said signal-plate, as will more fully hereinafter appear.
In the drawing, the letter Adesignates a portion of a door, and B is the case of a lock, consisting, in this example, of a bolt, G, which is applied to the door. The inner side of the bolt 0 is provided with a rack, D, which meshes with a pinion, E, secured to one end of a spindle, F, to the other end of which is secured an annunciator or'signaling device, G, so that when the bolt 0 is moved in one or the other direction the spindle F, together with the annunciator, is rotated by the action of the rack and pinion.
A suitable inscription may be marked on the face of the annunciator G, as seen in Fig. 1, and it is arranged under a plate, H, which is secured to the door A. This plate H is provided with an opening or sight, I, which is so arranged relatively to the annunciator G and the bolt 0 that when the bolt is shut or moved to its closed position, as. seen in the drawing, the opening I receives the inscription or signal part of the annunciator beneath it, so that the latter is exposed to view. When, however, the bolt is pushed inward the signal part of the annunciator just referred to is brought under the solid portion of the plate In applying the annunciator G to a door I so arrange it that the part thereof forming the-signal is exposed beneath the opening I when the bolt 0 is in a proper position to confine the door to its post, and hence when the door is looked a person on the outside of the room to which it belongs is enabled to see at a glaneewhether or not the room is occupied.
My invention can be applied to doors of state-rooms, bath-rooms, and various other public or private places, and can obviously be made in a variety of ways.
Whatl claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The ann-unciator-plate G and plate H,.having the opening I, in combination with the case B, bolt 0, rack and pinion D E, and extensible spindle F, substantially as described,
said spindle being made in two parts to telescope one within the other as and for the purpose set forth. In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand and seal this 18th day of February, 1876.
