mvemtoz COMBINED LOCK AND LATCH.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented June 15, 1915.
Application filed November 13, 1914. Serial No. 871,953.
To all whom it may concern:
e it known that I, DELOSS .BoRLAND, a citizen of the United States of America siding at Charleston, in the county of Tallaatchie and State of Mississippi, have invented new and useful Improvements in Combined Locks and Latches, of which the following is a specification. i
his invention relates to certain novel and useful improvements in combined locks and latches.
In carrying out the present invention, it of the erated by the k in projected position door so that movement from the inside of the of the latching bolt knob spindle from the escutcheon plate.
further object of my invention is to provide means of the class described which will embrace the desired features of simplicity, efiiciency and durability, which may be applied to any type of door look now in use and which may be put into and out of service quickly and conveniently.
l/Vith the above and other objects in view, the invention combination and inafter set forth in and falling scope of the claim.
he accompanying drawings; Figure 1 1 is a fragmentary side elevation of the inner side of a door having the lock thereof equipped with means g Fig. 3 is a horizontal sectional view through the same. Fig is a perspective view of the device removed from the escutcheon plate. Fig. 1s a new slmilar to Flg 1 SlIOWIH a thereof, such portion being h a mortise 2 opening onto the and seated within the mortise is an appropriate form of combined lock 8 embodying the usual locking bolt 4 capable of sliding movement to propositions under the acf a (ey, and a latching bolt 5 adapted for sliding movement to projected and retracted outer ends of the bolts being movable into openings formed in the door jamb, as usual.
Suitably fastened to theinner and outer surfaces of the door are escutcheonplates 6 respectively formed, adjacent to the upper endsvthereof, with openings 7 alining with openings 8 in the casing of the lock 3 and passed through these alining openings and the operating device of the latching bolt 5 is a knob spindle 9 having the inner and outer ends thereof provided with the usual knobs 10. Also formed in the escutcheon plates 6 below the openings 7 therein are key holes 11 alining with each with similar holes formed in the ing so that a key may be introduced lock to actuate the locking bolt 5.
n accordance with my present invention, of the combined 3 ad acentto the inner side oor is formed with a vertical slot disposed immediately behind the latching o t 5 and ormed in the adjacent wall of t e mortise 2 is a similar slot 13 registering with the slot 12. passed a latching pin thereof terminating within and passed through the slot 16 is a pin 17 having the inner end thereof secured within an opening in the lower extremity of the arm 15, and the outer end provided with a thumbpiece he present instance, a leaf spring 19 tional engagement with the exposed surface of the escutcheon plate, so that the thumb piece will be held in actuated position.
11 practice, when it is desired to hold the latching bolt so that inward movement of edge of connection with the accompany drawings, the construction, mode of operation and manner of employing my improved latching device for the latching bolts of combined locks and latches will be readily apparent.
' it will be seen that I have provided a device whereby the latching bolt may be locked in projected position so as to prevent opening of the door from the exterior thereof, while the parts of the device are so correlatching bolt 5 against movement to re- 7, tracted position under the action of the knob spindle 9 and knoblO, so that opening of the door from the outer side thereof will be prevented, the pin 17 is moved upwardly within the slot 16 under the action of the thumb piece 18, thereby sliding the arm 15 in a similar direction to elevate the latching. pin 14: and in this movement of the latching pin 1%, such pin is disposed immediately behind and in the path of movement of the bility of derangement to a minimum.
I claim: V
In combination, a combined lock and latch adapted to fit in the mortise in a door and escutcheon plates secured to the opposite sides of the door, one side wall of the casing of said lock havinga slot formed therein, a pin extending through said slot and working therein'and capable of movement to a position to V inward movement, an arm connected to one end of said pin and disposedimmediately such bolt is prevented under the action of the knob spindle. To relieve the latching bolt of the influence of the latching pin 1 1 the pin 17 is moved toward the lower end of the slot 16 under the action of the thumb iece 18, thereby withdrawing the latching pin from the path of movement of the latching bolt, the leaf spring 19 holding the latching pin in elevated and lowered positions.
In the modified form of the invention illustrated in Figs. 5 to 8 inclusive, the lower the latching bolt 5 adjacent to the rear end thereof is formed with a depending lug 20 and the inner end of the latching pin 1 1 is disposed adjacent to the lug 20 and capable of movement into the path of such lug, while the arm 15 carrying the pin 1 1 is disposed within a guide 21 suitably secured to the inner surface of the escutcheon plate. lVhen the latching pin 1 1 is elevated and disposed in the path of movement of the lug 20 movement of the latching bolt 5 to retracted position under the action of the knob spindle is prevented, while when the latching pin is lowered to' release the lug 20. the latching bolt may be retracted from the cutcheon plate at the inner s'i said last-named plate having a vertical formed therein, a said last slot and connected with the adjacent end of said arm, a thumb piece on the outer end of said pin whereby said arm inay be actuated to operate said first-named pin, and aleaf spring interposed betweensai arm and the adjacent face of the e'scutcheon plate; to hold the arm in operatedposition.
In testimony whereof in presence of two witnesses.
