COMPOSITION FOR PREPARING TRAClNG-MUSLIN.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 18,209, dated September 15, 1557.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, Jnssn K. PARK, of Marlborough, county of Ulster, and State of New York, have made certain new and useful Improvements in the Preparation of Tracing- Muslin for the Use of Draftsmen; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same-that is to say:

My invention is for a method or process of clearing or rendering more transparent the above-named material and otherwise rendering it. more useful for the copying of drafts or other designs by being laid over or upon said draft, 800., and having the lines traced over, so as to produce a facsimile.

This article as usually found in the market is. of inferior transparency; so much so, indeed, that it is somewhat difficult to distinguish the finer lines through it. It is also defective as to its surface, as well as in readily taking the ink.

My process may be thus described: I first prepare a composition of the following materials, which I find well adapted to the purpose. If the mass be considered as of nineteen (19) parts, eight (8) of these parts, by measure, shall be of spirits of turpentine or eamphene, eight parts of caster-oil, two (2) parts of Canada balsam, and one (1) part of balsam copaiba. This, when well mixed, is to be appliedto the tracingmuslin by means of a sponge or other suitable material, taking care to spread it evenly over the whole surface. The sheet is then to be rolled up and is to stand for thirtysix hours, or thereabout. It is then to be unrolled, and any excess remaining on the surface is to be wiped oft with a cotton or other like cloth. It is then to be rolled again for a like period and if on unrolling it does not appear to be dry it must be further rubbed until it becomes so. Again it is to he rolled, and in two weeks thereafter it will have become fit for use, although it will continue to improve by age, while just the reverse of this is true ot' the muslin not so prepared, as that deteriorates.

Having thus fully described my improvemtnt, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

lhe employment of the oil of the Palma Christi, or Castor-oil, alone or as an ingredient in a composition for increasing the transparency of tracing-muslin, as herein specified.
