UNITED STATEs PATENT OF oE.
-WILLIAM A. LLOYD, 0E CHESHIRE, MASSACHUSETTS.
IMPROVEMENT IN CANT-HOOKS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 181,693, dated August 29, 1876; application filed Junefi, 1876.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, WILLIAM A. LLoYD, of Cheshire, in the county of Berkshire and State of Massachusetts, have invented an Improvement in Cant-Hooks, of which the following is a specification My invention consists in combining a spring with a cant-hook in such a manner that it throws the hook against the log, insuring a bite.
In the drawing, which is a side elevation, A is a lever, around which a strap, B, is placed. At 0 are ears formed on the ends of the strap 13, between which the hook D is pivoted. An eye, a, is formed on the hook D, beyond the pivot, and one end of a spring, E, is connected with it. The other end of the spring is fixed to the lever A at b. A slight movement of the lever A throws the hook out, so that it may readily take hold of the log, and when the hook is used on the under side of the log the spring holds it to its place, so that it is not necessary to place it by hand. Connecting the hook with the lever by means of the strap B has an advantage over the ordinary methods of placing the hook in a mortise, as no material is cut away, and the full strength of the lever is secured.
I am aware that it is not broadly new to combine a spring with the pivoted dog of a.
log. There are several objections to the cantscrew and the bolt which serves as a pivot' for the cant-dog.
In my invention the spring lies close to the staff, and is attached to the heel of the dog, between the ears of the clasp encircling the stat? or lever. Thus the spiral spring is fully protected from contact with objects which would be liable to break the same; and it is also capable ot'permitting the dog to be thrown back upon the staff itself, so as to adapt any cant-hook for more general and effective use than that of the Schults hook.
Having thus described my invention, 1 claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Pat- 'ent , The cant-hook herein described, consisting of a lever, A, encircling-strap B, having ears (J, pivoted hook D, provided with extension or'heel beyond the pivot-point, and the spiral spring E, all the parts being constructed and relatively arranged as herein set forth, for the purpose specified.
