s. P GLARK. EITGHING DEVICE' FOR STOCK. Ne. 521,782. Peteeted Jene 26, 1894.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
SAMUEL F. CLARK, OF OIL .CITY, PENNSYLVANIA.
HITCHING DEVICE," FORSTOCK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 521,782, dated June 26,1894.
Application led October 10, 1893. Serial No. 487,743. (No model.)
To all whom/ t mayV concern.-
Be it known that I, SAMUEL` F.' CLARK, of Oil City, in the county of Venango and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Hitching Devices for Stock; and I do hereby declare the follow-Y 4 is a section on the line 4 4., Fig. 2.
Like letters indicate like the figures. f Y
The plate a maybe formed of any suitable material havingthe requisite strength. The opening b is formed in said plate a, the periphery of said opening having the groove b formed therein'.
Hinged to the front of the plate a. is the cover c, a pin d passing through lugs c on said plate and a lug c on said cover. By this construction the cover c is arranged to swing back and forth on one side of the plate a but is prevented from swinging through the opening b. The fact that the cover c is hinged at the top of the opening b keeps said cover nor'- m'ally in position over said opening b.
In order to relieve the strain on the hinge. of the cover c when there is a drawing strain from the rear of said plate upon said cover the opening b is countersunk as at b2. The cover c is accordingly beveled, as at c2, to fit neatly Within the opening b.` The periphery of the cover c may have the groove c3 opposite parts in each of the groove b so that the two form an opening c4 for the passage of the bitching strap or ychain c. Below the opening c4 formed by the grooves b', c3 is the idle 'roller f suitably journaled in the plate a. Y
The plate a is secured to the inside of the manger g, or other hitching place, an opening being formed in said manger coinciding with the opening b of the said plate, so that the cover c may be pushed back from the opening b from the front of the manger.
'Ihe halterv e' has secured to the inner end thereof aball or button h of greater size than the opening c4 to prevent its passing through said opening. This ball or button h is preferably formed of lead or other weighty material so that it will take up any slack in the halter e. The halter e may be further provided Witn a button at a suitable distance from the endthereof to limit the amount of said halter e which the weight h maydraw through the opening c4. When theweight h l.has been passed through the opening b and the cover c has been adjusted to close said opening it will be apparent that it will be impossible to withdraw the halter by simply pulling at the opposite end thereof. If, however, it is desired to release the animal it is simply necessary to push back the cover c and Withdraw the Weight h.
A tube 1c .mayl be secured onthe inside of the manger for the reception of the weight h and that portion of the strap on the inside of said manger. Bythe use of this tube the weight h will always be sure to act, but if the weight merely hung into the manger itself, if said manger happened to be full of hay when the weight h was passed through the opening b it would rest upon the hay and so fail to take up the slack in the strap.
lVhat I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The combination with a manger 0r like hitching station having an opening formed therein, of a plate secured thereto, said plate having a countersunk opening coinciding with said first mentioned opening, and a groove in the periphery of said countersunk opening, a cover hinged on one side of said plate constructed to fit within said counter-` sunk opening, said cover having a groove formed in the edge thereof coinciding with said first mentioned groove, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
In testimony whereof I, the said SAMUEL F. CLARK, have hereunto set my hand.
SAMUEL F. CLARK.
