ADJUSTABLE HANGER.
Specification of Letters Patent.

Application filed December 15, 1913. Serial No. 806,885.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, OTTO PRIEM, a citizen of the United States, residing at Carpenter, in the county of Mitchell and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Adjustable Hangers; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention is in the nature of an ad j ustable hanger of the class known as gambrel sticks used for suspending the carcasses of slaughtered animals.
The general object of the invention is to provide an improved device of this character, adaptable by simple adjustment to use for suspending whole beeves, hams, or quarters of beeves, calves, hogs, or sheep, whereby a single device will serve for all of these purposes, obviating the necessity of providing a separate hanger for each class of carcasses.
A special object of the invention is to improve, simplify and cheapen the construction of devices of this character, while increasing their capacity and usefulness.
With these objects in view the invention consists of an improved construction, arrangement and combination of parts of an adjustable hanger, which will be hereinafter fully described and afterward specifically claimed.
In order that this construction and operation may be readily comprehended, I have illustrated an improved embodiment of my adjustable hanger invention in the accompanying drawings and will now proceed to fully describe the same, in connection with said drawings, in which,
Figure 1 represents in front elevation a complete hanger made in accordance with my invention, and, Fig. 2 represents a vertical sectional view taken on the plane indicated by the broken line 22 of Fig. 1.
Like reference characters mark the same parts in all the figures.
Referring specifically to the drawings, 3 indicates the main body of the hanger which in this instance is shown as an I-beam having upper and lower flanges 4t and 5 and a web 6 joining these flanges thereby providing a longitudinal groove in each side of the beam.
Secured transversely to one end of the beam 3 is a bracket 7 provided at its upper and lower ends, as at 8 and 9, with eyes or hooks, a hooklO of the usual construction being secured pivotally in the lower eye 9. Mounted to travel longitudinally upon the beam 3 is a U-shaped slide comprising a base 11 and upright wings 12, from the latter of which lugs 13 project into the grooves of the beam 3, being fitted therein sufliciently loosely to permit of free movement in either direction. Secured to the outer end of the slide is a bracket 14 of a construct-ion similar to the bracket 7, the only change being the widening of the main body to surround both the beam and the slide, said beam 1 1 being provided at its lower end with an eye 15 to pivot-ally or loosely receive a hook 16, of the same character of construction as the hook 10, the points of the two hooks, for the purposes for which. this hangeris to be used, being preferably directed outwardly or away from each other, as shown in Fig. 1. The bracket 14: is secured in the slide by the rivet 17 and is provided at its upper end with an eye 18, similar to the eye 8 before described, a link 19 being pivotally connected at its lower end with the eye 18 and at its upper end with the ring 20, a similar link 21 in a like manner connecting the ring 20 with the eye 8. Rising from the upright wings or flanges 12 of the slide are bearings 22 in which is journaled a transverse shaft 23, a ratchet wheel 24 being secured upon said shaft outside of its bearings, with which is engaged a pawl 25 pivoted at 26 to the bearing flange to prevent the shaft from turning in one direction. Between the bearing flanges and rigidly secured to said shaft 23 is a pinion 27 which engages with a rack 28 formed in or carried by the upper flange 5 of the main body or beam 3.
In the position shown in Fig. 1 the slide is at its extreme left hand position on the main body or beam 3 and, inasmuch as the pawl 25 prevents the turning of the shaft 23 in that direction, movement of the slide to the right, whereby the distance between the books 10 and 16 would be decreased, is prevented. With the parts in this position, the whole device may be suspended by means of the ring 20 and the hooks 10 and 16 engaged with the largest object to be suspended. Should it be desired, however, to suspend a smaller object, the pawl 25 is disengaged from the ratchet wheel 24, which will permit the turning of the pinion 27, and the slide is moved along the beam 3 to the right until the hooks l0 and 16 are at proper distance apart to suspend a smaller body. The reengagement of the pawl with the ratchet Wheel Will prevent the further movement and leave the hooks in proper position for suspending the smaller body. The shaft 23 may be rotated in adjusting the position of the hooks 10 and 16, by any suitable means, such for instance as a crank 29 and, inasmuch as the suspending devices have freemovement upon each other, all of the parts will readily accommodate themselves to the changed position of the hooks.
While I have specifically described the construction and operation of the component parts of my invention, itWill be obvious to those skilled in the art to which the invention more nearly appertains, that slight changes and variations may be made therein Without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention.
Having thus fully described my invention, What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters-Patent of the United States is:
1. A device. of the character described comprising a;main-beam, a bracket rigidly secured to one end thereof, a slide on the beam, rack teeth onthe upper face of the beam, a pinion carried by theslide engaging said teeth, means for turning the pin ion in one direction, ratchet and pawl mechanism for preventing the turning the pinion in the other direction, a bracket secured upon the outer end of the slide, hooks suspended irom the lower ends of the brackets, links connected With the upper ends of the brackets, and a suspending ring connected with the upper end of the links.
2. A device of the character described comprising an I-beam having rack teeth along its upper edge and grooves in each side, a slide comprising a base and upright Wings embracing the slide, lugs on the Wings of the slide engaging in the grooves of the beam, bearing flanges carried by the Wings of the slide, a shaft journaled in said flanges,
a ratchet and pulley mechanism for controlling the rotation of the shaft in one direction, a pinion on the shaft engaging the rack teeth of the beam, a bracket secured to one end of the beam carrying a suspending hook, a bracket secured to the opposite end of the slide and carrying another suspending hook, links loosely connected with the upper end of the brackets and a suspending ring loosely attached to the upper end of the links.
