Description
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GEORGE \V. TALMADGE, OF GOLDEN PRAIRIE, IOWA.
CATTLE-STANCHION.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 269,348, dated December 19, 1882,
Application filed August 15, 1882. (Model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE W. TALMADGE, of Golden Prairie,.in the county of Delaware and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Stanchions; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings, and to thelettersofreterence marked thereon, making a part of this specification.
This invention relates to certain improvements in cattle-stanchions; and it has for its object to provide certain improved means to operate the stanchion beam, as more fully hereinafter specified.
The above-mentioned object I attain by the means illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 represents afront elevation of my invention, and Fig. 2 a rear elevation of the same.
The letter A indicates the timbers forming the front portion of the stall, which maybe of any ordinary or approved construction.
B indicates the stanchioirbeam, which is pivoted at itslower end between the lower beams of the stalhits upper end setting loosely between the upper beams of said stall, and when closed setting against a suitable stop located between said upper beams. To the said stanchion-beam, near its upper end, is secured one end of a rope,,D, which passes over a pulley, E, and has attached to its other end a counterbalance, F, which tends to draw the stanchionbeam to a vertical position. The stanchionbeam has fulcrumed to it alever, G, which has connected to it, by means of a pivot, H, a flat bar, I, pivoted to one of the side timbers of the stall, as shown.
The letter Kindicates a catch, which serves to limit the movement of the leverG when the stanchion-beamisclosed. Thestanchion-beam B, in its normal position, as indicated in dotted lines in Fig. 1, being in an inclined position and the leverG in a horizontal position, food is placed at one side of the stanchion, opposite the opening K, through which the animal will naturally insert its head to reach the food. Such food being placed below the level of the lever G the animal, by depressing the lever, will give the bar B an initial movement, which will permit the weight and rope to carry it home, the weight keeping it in position and holding the animal.
Having thus described myinvention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s-
lhecombination, with thetimbers and beams of the stall, of the upright movable stanchionbeam B, the lever G, the bar I, the latch K, the rope I), pulley E, and weight F. all arranged to operate substantially as and for the purposes specified.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature, in presence of two witnesses, this 3d day of July, 1882.
eno. W. TALMADGE.
