IMPROVEMENT IN FOLDING TABLES.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 181,622, dated August 29, 1876; application filed May 16, 1876.

To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, WILBER FIsK BAR- THOLOMEW, of St. Louis, St. Louis county, and State of Missouri, have invented a new and Improved Table, of which the following is a specification:

4 The object of my invention is to furnish an improved table, which shall be so constructed that it may be readily folded into compact form, and which, when opened out for use, may be adjusted in height as may be required.

The invention will first be described in connection with drawing, and then pointed out in the claim.

In the accompanying drawing, A represents the main leaf or top of the table, to the under side of which are attached bars or a frame, B, to stiffen the said top and keep it from warping. To the bars B are pivoted, or to the bars B or top A are hinged, the upper part 0 oft-he end frames of the table. The upper parts 0 are connected with the lower parts or feet D by a standard, E, the upper end of which is rigidly attached to said upper part (J, and its lower end slides in a socket in the lower part D, where it is secured in place when adjusted by a spring pin or catch, F, a set-screw, or other convenient fastening. The part of the standard E that enters the socket of the feet D is made square or of some other form that will prevent it from turning, and the said feet are held down upon the standard E by spiral springs Gr, coiled around said standards. The end frames 0 E D are held in place, when turned out for use, by braces or buttons I. Two standards, E, may be used, or a single standard, or a single standard and guide-rods, as may be desired. To the edges of the tops A are hinged the edges of two leaves, H, each half the size of the top A, which, when not required for use, may be folded up upon the upper side of the top A, and when required for use may be turned down into the same plane with said top, where they may be supported by slides, brackets, or other well-known means.

With this construction, the lady using the table can readily raise it to a convenient height for use as a cutting-table, and, when ironing or sewing, can lower it and draw it over her lap, and use it while sitting in her sewing-chair.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

The combination, with table-top A and bars B, of the button I, part 0, supported by a standard, E, that slides in socketed part D, as shown and described.
