IMPROVEMENT IN ORNYAMENTAL CHAINS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 181,511, dated August 22, 1876; application filed J one 5, 1876.

Be it known that I, Paoctron E. WITHER- ELL, of North'Attleborough, in the county of Bristol and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Ornamental Chain-Links, which improvement is fully set forth in the following specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, in which Figure 1 represents a longitudinal section of my improvement. Fig. 2 is a similar sec tion thereof in-a plane at right angles to Fig. 1. Fig. 3 shows a modification of my improvement.

' Similar letters indicate corresponding parts. My improvement is especially adapted to links for ornamental chains; and it consists in the combination of three interlaced rings and two or more transverse rings, which are arranged with the inner or interlaced ring in such a manner that the said transverse rings areheld in position by the two outer rings. Within the inner or middle interlaced ring is placed a filling-piece, by the action of which the several parts are held in symmetric positions, as will be hereinafter explained at length.

In the drawing, the lettersA A A designate the three interlaced rings of my link,

and B the transverse rings, which, in the-example shown in Figs. 1 and 2, are three in number, and in Fig. 3 consists of a series of five, such transverse rings being placed side by side, and of the: form shown, and beingmade of different shapes from each-other.

The inner or middle interlaced ring A is pref erably made oblong, while the outer rings A A are circular, or of any other suitable form.

The transverse rings B are arranged around the inner or middle vinterlaced ring A, and are there held in'place by the two outer rings A A. Within the middle or oblong interlaced ring A is placed a filling-piece, O, which is so made as to allow the outer rings A A" to be interlaced with the inner ring, but at the same time to press the said outer rings tightly against the ends of the inner ring, as

clearly seen inFigs. 1 and 2. By this means either of the outer interlaced rings A A" is prevented from moving inwardly, and, consequently, the transverse rings B are held in a central position with relation to each of the interlacedrings.

What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

1. The combination, in a'chain-link, of three interlaced rings, A 'A A.,'and two or more transverse rings, B, arranged around the inner or middle interlaced ring, substantially as de-.

2. The com bination of a filling-piece, O, with the middle interlaced ringA, and with the outer rings A A and the transverse rings-B,
