IMPROVEMENT IN BRACELETS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 215,461, dated May 20, 1879; application filed October 12, 1878.

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, MEINHOLD KAYSER, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Bracelets, of which the following is a specification.

The object of myinvention and improvement is to produce a bracelet which will expand and contract, so as to be readily slipped over i the hand and be closed upon the wrist or arm and the nature of my invention consists in constructing the bracelet of a double series of bars or plates crossing each other at their centers diagonally, and jointed by pins or rivets at the centers and ends somewhat in the form of a series of Xs continuously, so as to form a ring, which, by pressure or drawing, can be closed or enlarged into a less or greater size or circumference.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 represents the bracelet closed. Fig. 2 represents the bracelet expanded.

The bracelet is constructed in the followingmanner I take a sufficient number of plates or bars of suitable length, breadth, and thickness, according to the size of the bracelet required, all of which plates are to be of similar dimensions, such as are shown in the drawings at a to. These I unite at their centers by apin, b, in pairsr Each pair is also united at the ends to the adjoining pair all round, so as to form a continuous circle or ring, as shown in the drawings at c. The joints at the centers and ends of the plates are made sufficiently close to bind somewhat, so as to hold the bracelet at any desiredpoint of expansion, and at the same time to permit the parts to move on each other with but a slight pressure. The plates of which the bracelet is made may be solid or of open-work like filigree.

They may also be made of any ornamental or fancy shapes which will admit of the con- 'struction as herein shown. They may be made of any suitable material, such as jewelers use in the manufacture of bracelets. This mode of constructing bracelets is also applicable to the construction of belts, necklaces, and bands for the head, for which purposes the size of the plates and the number used must be varied, as required.

1 am well aware of the patent to Samuel Friend and Geo. Sieler, dated December'21, 1858, for extension finger-ring, and I do not claim as my invention the use of folding bars in combination with a spring-ring. Such a construction and purpose as are set forth in Friend and Sielers specification are entirely incompatible with the construction and design or object of my invention, which does not admit of any rigid or solid construction of any part of the circle.

I do not claim the application of crossed jointed bars to a solid ring or a spring-ring, or in any manner to form a spring; but

What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

A bracelet constructed of the bars or plates a a, combined and arranged together so as to form a circle. the joints whereof are so adjusted as to allow the bracelet to be expanded and contracted by all the parts moving on each other, and at the same time to hold the bracelet fixed at any desired point of adjustment in said expansion or contraction, substantially in the manner and for the purpose set forth.
