No..181,406. Patented Aug.22,1876.
MPHERS. PNOTOJ-ITHOGRIPHER. WASHINGTON. D. Cv
ETNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE;
PETER BURNS, 0E SYRACUSE, NEW YORK.
IMPROVEMENT IN COMBINED HARNESS-SADDLE AND CHECK-HOOK.
I Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 181,406, dated-August 22, 1876 application filed August 11, 1876.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, PETER BURNS, of Syracuse, in the county of Onondaga and State of New York, have invented a certain Improvement in HarnessS-addles, of which the follow-.
ing is a specification:
My invention consists in seeuringthe cheekrein hook to the pad-tree and saddle by means of a bolt, the head of which, projecting above the saddle, has a horn, for preventing the accidental unhooking of the cheek-rein, and also a guard-plate, which, extending downward in front of the saddle, protects the pad-leather against wear from the check-rein.
In the annexed drawings, Figure l is a section, showing the construction of the bolt, and its application for securing theeheck-rein hook to the pad-tree and saddle. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the bolt detached.
The same letters of reference are used in both figures in the designation of identical parts.
A refers to the pad-tree; B, to the saddle O, to the check-rein hook, and D to the leather interposed between the pad-tree and the saddle.
The check-rein hook is secured. by the bolt E and nut c, the square upper end of the bolt fitting a square or rectangular aperture in the Saddle, to prevent it from turning.
The thin flat head E of the bolt is provided with a horn, E between the tip of which and thecheck-rein hook just Sufficient is left for the passage of the check-rein edgewise, so that when once applied the check-rein cannot very Well become disengaged from the hook without special manipulation.
The forward end of the flat head is curved down in front of the saddle, and, extending past the leather D, forms a shield or guardplate, E for protecting Said leather from wear by the check-rein.
What I claim as my invention, and desire PETER BURNS.
