JOHN F. CHASE, OF EAST HADDAM, CONNECTICUT.
IMPROVEMENT IN SPRING-OLEVISES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 181,313, dated August 22, 1876; application led August 17, 1876.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, J oHN F. CHASE, of East Haddam, (post-oflice address, Hadlyme, Connecticut,) in the county of Middlesex, and in the State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Spring- Clevis; and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, making a part of this specification.
The nature of my, invention consists in the construction and arrangement of a springclevis, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
ln order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawing, in Which- Figure l .is a side view of my improved spring-clevis, and Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section of the same.
A represents a hollow tube, provided at one end with the link B, and at the other end with a flanged collar, C, said collar being screwed or otherwise permanently affixed to it. The tube A is further provided with longitudinal slots a. a on opposite sides, extending from the linkB for asuitable distance. D represents a hook formed with a shank or stem,
E, which is inserted in the tube A, and has a key, b, passed through its inner end, the ends of which key extend through the slots a. in the tube, as shown. Around this end of the tube. A is placed a flanged collar, G, `which is loose and slides on the tube. Between the two collars C and G is a spiral spring, I, surrounding the tube, and holding the loose collar G against the key b. When the draft is applied vthe spring I is compressed by the shank or stem E, being pulled outward, and the key b therein moving the collar G toward the outer end of the tube, and thus the dead pull of the team in starting is entirely obviated.

The hollow slotted tube A, having the fixed l collar C at one end, and the sliding collar G and link B at the other, in combination with the hook D, having stem E, the key b, and spring I, all constructed and operating substantially as shown and described. v
