Description

A. U. McDONALD.
PEGG'ING AWL HANDLE.
Patented March 20,18
ATTORNEY UNITED STATES PATENT QFFICE.
ALEXANDER U. MCDONALD, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
IMPROVEMENT IN PEGGlNG-AWL HANDLES.
S ecification forming part of Letters Patent No. [88,530, dated-March 20, 1877 application filed February 10, 1877.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALEXANDER URQUHART MCDONALD, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Pegging-Awl Handles, of
which the following is a specification:
.The figure is a longitudinal section of a peggingawl handle to which my improvement has been applied.
The object of this invention is to furnish pegging-awl handles which shall. be so constructed as to withdraw the awl from the leather automatically before the handle is raised, so that the operationof withdrawing the awl will not pull the leather up from its place.
The invention consists in the combination of the metal or rubber spring, the sleeve, and the cap with the stem, the awl, and theihandle, as hereinafter fully described.
A represents the handle. B is the awl, and O is the clutch by which the awl B is secured to the stem D. The stem D is inserted and secured in the cavity of the handle A. Upon the inner part of the stem 1) is placed a spring, E, which may be a spiral spring, as shown in the drawings, or it may be a rubber block. The inner end of the spring E rests against a shoulder or collar formed upon the stem D, or a pin passed through said stem, or the inner end of the cavity of the handle A. The outer end of the spring rests against the inner end of the sleeve or collar F, which is placed upon the outer part of the stem D.
The movement of the sleeve F upon the stem D is limited by a pin, d, passed through the will be forced back into the cavity of the handle A, allowing the awl B to enter the leather to the desired depth. The elasticity of the spring E will then force the sleeve F and cap G outward; but as the cap Gr rests upon the leather and cannot move in that direction, the
effect will be to raise the-handle A and with-- draw the awl B, while the pressure of the cap G holds the leather to its place.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent The combination of the metal or rubber spring E, the sleeve F, and the cap G with the stem D, the awl B, and the handle A, substantially as hereinshown and described.
ALEX. U. MoDONALD.
