IMPROVEMENT lhl DES'KS.
Speciiication forming part of Letters Patent No. 1811,@25, dated August 15, 1876; application led June 26, 1876.
. a specification Figure 1 is a top view of my improved desk, the side sections or wings being shown in section. Fig. 2 is a front view of the saine.
Similar 'letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
The object of this invention is to furnish business-desks provided with side wings or sections, in such a way that the sections may beA moved directly forward so as to expose their contents; that they may be swungaround out ofthe way While exposing their contents; and may be swung against the sides ot' the desk, to inclose their contents and protect them from dust, where they may be locked in place, if desired.
The invention consists in a desk made in sections, so constructed that they may be connected and disconnected at will; in the co1n bination, with the main desk, ot' one 0r more side sections or wings, so constructed and hinged that they may be closed against the sides of the said main desk, moved forward to expose their contents, andswung back out of the way While still exposing their contents; and in the combination of the brackets, provided witharms and pivots at their upper and lower ends, with the sections of the desk, as hereinafter fully described.
A represents the main or central section of' the desk, which is a complete desk in itself, and may be an upright cylinder or table-desk. rlhe upper part of the desk A may be furnished with pigeon-holes for papers, or shelves for books, and is closed by turning .up the table a. The lower part of the desk A may be furnished with drawers, with pigeon-holes, or with shelves, as may be desired. B are the side sections of the desk, which may be provided with pigeon-holes, shelves, or drawers, as may be desired, and one or both of which may be used, and which are pivoted in their upper and lower parts tothe arms c1 of the, brackets O. The middle part of the brackets extends vertically along the forward part of the sides of the desk A, and has pivots c2 at its upper and lower ends, to enter eyes or sockets attached to the sides of the said desk A.
The sections or wings B may be tightly closed by swinging them around with their faces against the sides of the desk A, as shown at the left-hand side of Figs. 1 and 2, the brackets O being completely inelosed and out of the way.
The sections B may be opened by swinging them forward, without turning them into the position shown in dotted lines in Fig. 1, the sections moving through a curve, as indicated by the dotted lines at the left-hand side of Fig. l, but their sides remaining always parallel with their former positions; or they may he opened by swinging them around, as shown at the right-hand side ot' Fig. 2, and in full lines at the righthand side ot' Fig. l, bringing their open side parallel with the front of the desk A, so that they may be out of the way.
NVith this construction, if' a mans business is small he can buy only the central section A. As his business increases he can buy one or both the side sections, and apply them to his desk withoutdisguring it,orhavingitchanged in the least, all the parts being made to correspond in style.
With a desk constructed as herein described a person may use the writing-table and thecentral part ot the desk without exposing the contents ot' the side sections to view, thus protecting them from dust, dirt, &c.
The side sections need not be opened unless needed.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patentl. A desk, having end sections or compartments adapted to be connected with or disconnected from said desk, substantially as herein shown and described.
2. A desk, having outer pivoted sections closing against the outside ends of desk, as and for the purpose specified.
3. The combination ofthe brackets O, provided with arms c1 and pivots c2 at their upper and lower ends, with the sections A B ot' the desk, substantially as herein shown and described.
OHAS. A. ATKINSON.
