IMPROVEMENT lN SCARF-PINS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 1 80,890, dated August 8, 1876; application filed July 14, 1876.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALBERT KOMP, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Scarf-Pins, which improvement is fully set forth in the following specificatiomin which Figure 1 represents a rear view of a scarf provided with one of my pins. Fig. 2 is a front view of the shield supporting the pin. Fig.3 is a plan of the pin detached. Fig. 4 is a longitudinal section of the shield with the pin.

This invention consists in the combination, with a scarf-pin, of a supporting-plate having a projecting lip, which can be turned over the edge of the shield, to which the pin is to be' secured, so that by said lip the pin is effectually prevented from moving back out of the desired position, and at the same time the operation of adjusting the pin is materially facilitated.
In the drawing, the letter A designates a scarf-pin, which is secured to a supportingplate, B, of thin sheet metal. The shank of the pin shown in the drawing is round, and is held in position by turning the edges of the middle portion of the supporting-plate over it, the butt-end of said shank being made to bear against a shoulder, a, so that the pin is prevented from receding. The shank of the pin may, however, be flat, or of any other desirable shape, and the supporting-plate may be provided with one or more pairs of ears,which are turned over said shank from opposite sides. The outer end of the supporting-plate B forms a lip, b, which is turned down over the edge of the shield (J, to which the needle is to be attached, and which etlectually prevents said needle from sliding back out of the required position. From the sides of the supportingplate project lugs c, with holes to receive rivets or other devices for fastening the same to the shield, (see Figs. 1, 2, and 4,) where the same is fastened by turning it under.
By means of the supporting-plate the distance to which the needle projects beyond the shield may be adjusted, and the operation of securing the needle firmly in the required position is rendered comparatively easy.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. The combination, with a scarf-pin, A, of a supporting-plate, B, provided with a lip, b, adapted to be bentunder the edge ofthe shield, to which the pin is to be fastened, substantially as shown and described.
2. The combination, with a scart pin, A, of a sumiorting-plate, B, provided with a shoulder, a, lip b, lugs c, and lip d, substantially as set forth.
