IMPROVEMENT IN COMBINED BRUSH AND MOP HANDLES.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 180,723, dated August 8, 1876; application filed July 22, 1876.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, SPENCER J. MATHER, of Detroit, in the county of Wayne and State of Michigan, have invented a new and valuable Improvement in Combined Brush and Mop Holder; and I do hereby declare that the following is afull, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, makinga part of this specification, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.

Figure 1 of the drawings is a representation of a side elevation of my invention. Fig. 2 is an end viewfpartly broken away, showing the pivoted end of the jaw with its operating screw-rod.

This invention has for its object to provide a simple and effective means for operating the pivoted jaw qt devices known as combined mop and brush holders and it therefore consists in forming the pivoted end or shank of thejaw with gear-teeth, and employing a worm, passing directly through the center of the head or handle, the spiral threads of which mesh with the teeth upon the shank of the pivoted jaw, so that, by the simple turning of the worm in either direction, the jaw will be made to recede from, or be brought nearer to, the fix-jaw, as circumstances may require.

In the accompanying drawings, A represents a fix-jaw of a combined mop and brush holder, said jaw being formed with a socket, to, at its lower end for the reception of a suitable handle, 11. Into the shank c of this jaw is formed a recess or slot, d, for the reception of the shank e of a jaw, B, said jaw being pivoted within the slot d by a pivoted bolt, f,

passing through the lower end of the shank e. The pivoted jaw B has formed upon the lower end of its shank e a series of gear-teeth, g, by which said jaw is operated through the medium of a worm, O, passing through the recess or slot d in the center of the head or shank c. This worm O is formed with a suitable thumbpiece, h, by which it may be rotated.

The jaws A B are provided with suitable teeth j, near their edge, for firmly holding the brush or mop when placed between them. Brackets k are also formed upon the jaws A B, so that when the device is used as a brushholder the teeth j clamp, while back of the brush rests against the lower surfaces of the brackets k.

It will be noticed that the worm is a much more simple device for operating the pivoted jaw than the means heretofore employed, while in its operation it is more effective and less liable to get out of order, and the cost in the manufacture of said devices is greatly reduced.

Having now fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- In a mop or brush holder, the combination, with a pivoted jaw, B, having gear-teeth g, of a worm, 0, arranged at right angles to the handle, for operating said jaw, substantially as and for the purpose described.
