Description

L. HEYWOOD.
SET'I'E-ES.
Patented Aug. 1, 1 876.
iiiimesszs= N- PETEHS. PEIOYILLITHOGRAPHER, WASHINGTON. D. G- '1 LEVI HEYWOOD, OF GARDNER, MASSACHUSETTS, ASSIGNOR TO HEYWOOD, I
PATENT OFFIGE.
BROTHERS & 00., OF SAME PLACE.
IMPROVEMENT m SETTEES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 180,582, dated August 1, 1876; application filed March 13, 1876.
To all whom it'ma-y concern Be it known that that I, LEVI HEYWOOD, of Gardner, in the county of Worcester and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Settees; and that the following .is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, making part of this specification.
This invention is in the nature of an improvement in settees and the invention consists in a settee constructed with two or more independent adjustable backs, as is hereinafter more particularly described.
1n the accompanying sheet of drawings, Figure l is a front view of my improved settee, partly in section; and Fig.2, an end view of same.
Similar letters of reference indicate like parts in the several figures.
It is often desirable that the occupants of settees when in conversation shall be ois-eo-m's. In the settee, as ordinarily constructed, with a rigid and unadjustable back, this of course, is not possible, and even where the settee is constructed with an adjustable back, which is common to all the seats, this arrangement cannot be had. To construct a settee that will admit of the occupants setting face to face, I make my settee A with a series of independent backs, B, each seat having its own back, and each back being entirely independent and disconnected from the other. To this end, I make for each seat a, the back B, and secure this back to ar1ns O, which are fastened to each side of the back, and extend thence through slots I) in the arms D,
position of the settee, but by merely pushing the backs from one side of the settee t0- the other, their arms moving freely in the slots b and c in the arms D and seats a. The bolts e, that secure the backs to the arms 0, permit the backs to be adjusted to any coiwenient angle that will be comfortable to the occupant. This angle is maintained by any suitable stop which will hold the back at the .de-
sired angle. The seats and backs may be upholster-ed, or otherwise prepared, and the settee may be of any convenient size or form, and made from any suitable material.
Each pair of arms 0 that holds the backs in position, may be of one piece of metal, or of two pieces of metal, if desired.
Having thus described my invention, What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- A settee, having two or more seats, each having an independent reversible back in combination with the reversing-arms O, slotted fixed arms D, and slotted seats a, constructed and operating substantially as specified.
LEVI HEYWOOD.
