January 26, 1928 This invention relates to improvements in fastening devices, especially fastening devices for hand bags and other receptacles. An object of the invention is to provide means for keeping a hand bag or the like shut in a simple and effective manner, at the same time permitting the receptacle to be easily opened.

The invention is illustrated in connection with an ordinary hand bag comprising a body having the edges at the mouth thereof secured to a pair of pivoted frames which can be moved towards each other to shut the hand bag or pulled apart to open it; the

two frames being provided with a fastening member which is easy to operate and yet very positive in its action to keep the receptacle closed while it is being carried about. Obviously, the invention as herein set forth can be practiced in connection with any receptacle having one or more parts which are relatively movable to open or closed position.

Other objects and advantages of the invention will clearly appear from the following description taken in connect-ion with the drawings which illustrate the preferred form of my invention; but I may of course, make changes in shape, size and arrangement of parts within the principle of the invention as indicated by the scope and meaning of the appended claim.

said parts being in the positions which they occupy when the hand bag is shut;

frame 1 and 2 are connected by means of hinges 5 so that the frames can be moved to wards and from each other by means of these hinges as pivots. When the invention is practiced in connection with a hand bag for instance, the edges of the mouth of the bag are connected part to one of the frames and part to the other'along thetop 3 and sides 4 so that when the frames are pulled apart the bag can be opened andwhen they are moved together the bag can be closed. To keep the bag closed I provide a fastening member which slides along the tops of the

11 and 2 but which can be moved to such position as will permit the frames 1 and 2 to be released so that the bag can beopened, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.

Each of the frames 1 and 2 may be chan- (all nel shaped in cross section as indicated in Fig.

4 and from the top part 3 of the frame 1 extends a web 6 which connects the frame to a fiat top 7 having a flange 8 extending along the outer edge thereof. This flange projects above and below the top 7 and may be rounded for the sake of appearance and finish while along the opposite edge of the top 7 extends a rib 9 pro1ect1ng in an upward direction only. The flange 8 extends from one end of the top 7 of the frame 1 to the other while the rib 9 extends along the opposite edge from one end towards the other end but terminates short of the other end as indicated clearly in Figs. 1 and 3. The top part 3 of the other frame 2 has a similar web 6 whichsupports a flat top 10 but the web 6 of the frame 2 is frame 1 so that when the frames 1 and 2 are hinged together the top 7 of the frame 1 will lie over the top 10 of the frame 2 as indicated in Fig. 4 and the outer edge of the top 10 may have a flange 11 similar. to the flange 8.. When the bag is closed the flange 11 will abut To cooperate with the frames 1 and 2 and fasten them to each other when the bag is to be closed, I providea sliding fastener member 12 which may be C-shaped when viewed in end elevation as indicated in Fig. 4. The ends of this C-shaped catch 12 embrace the upperand lower edges of the flange 11 likesomewhat narrower than the web of the iii) wise the edge of the rib 9 but can slide freely back and forth along the flange 11. So long as the catch 12 engages both the rib 9 and flange 11 the two frames 1 and 2 will keep the receptacle closed as indicated in Figs. 1, 2 and 1. But if the fastener 12 be moved to the right with reference to Fig. 3 as far as it will go it will slide along the flange 11 and eventually pass beyond and release the rib 9 so that the frames can be pulled apart and the hand ba opened. For this purpose, the rib 9 must terminate as far from the adjacent end of the frame 1 as the length of the catch 12. The

8 and 11 may be turned towards each other at their ends so as to round off the tops of the frames 1 and 2.

I may also provide the catch 12 with a part 13 in the form of an open square ring hinged to the catch 12 as at 1 1 to enable the catch 12 to be easily slipped back and forth along the flange 11 and rib 9 by hand. The ring 13 is of course, for ornamental effect also,

To give the frames a more finished appearance the frame 1 may be provided with metal loops 12 of any desired shape at its upper corners at both ends.

With this construction the receptacle can very readily be held shut by moving the frames together and slipping the catch 12 to the left, making it engage both the flange 11 and rib 9; and the receptacle can very readily be opened by moving the catch 12 to the right so as to make it slide past the end of the rib 9 whereupon the frames 1 and 2 can'be pulled apart.

The fastening means herein described can of course be used with receptacles different from hand bags, and of almost any construction including movable parts secured together and released as desired.

I claim A fastening device comprising a pair of frames hinged together, said frames each having a flat top, the top of one frame being wider than the top of the other and overlapping the same when the frames are in closed position, the wider top having an upstanding rib at one edge thereof, the other top having a flange at the edge thereof adjacent said rib and extending above and below the same, a portion of which abuts against said rib when the frames are in closed position, and a C- shaped catch slidably mounted up on and embracing said flange, one end of the C- shaped catch being adapted to engage the rib when the frames are in closed position to secure the same together.
