Description

April 28, 1931. H 'F 1,803,245
GATE HOOK Filed April 6, 1929 LHGk/IFF I Patented Apr. 28, 1931 PATENT OFFICE EARL L. H. GRAFF, F PETALUMA,'GAL1FORNIA GATE HO 0K Application filed April 6,
This invention relates to improvements in gate hooks, and has particular reference to a gate hook which may be expanded or contracted for the purpose of accommodating for various distances between the fastening elements secured upon the posts and upon the gate.
Another object is to provide a device which is relatively strong and yet one which will be capable of adjustment.
Another object is to provide simple means whereby the attachment can be quickly made.
A further object is to provide a device of this character which is simple in construction,
neat in appearance and economical to manufacture.
Other objects and advantages will be apparent during the course of the following description.
In the accompanying drawing forming a part of this specification, and in which like numerals are employed to designate like parts throughout the same,
Figure I is a perspective View of my improved invention,
Figure II is an enlarged detail fragmentary side elevation,
Figure III is a cross sectional View,
Figure IV is a side elevation of a gate having my invention applied thereto.
IVith the ordinaryform of gate hook, it is oftentimes difficult to install the same due to the fact that a slight variation willeither make the hook catch and bind, or the sagging of the gate will make the gate hook loose.
Applicant has therefore devised a very simple means whereby the hook may be quickly and effectively adjusted to offset these various conditions.
In the accompanying drawing wherein for the purpose of illustration is shown a preferred embodiment of my invention the numerals 5 and 6 designate the ordinary gate posts, one of which has hinged thereto a gate 45 The hinges are indicated by the reference numerals 8 and 9. In the post 5, I place a staple 11, and in the gate 7 I place a staple 12. The staple 11 has secured thereto a pivoted member 13 having an eye 14 received by the staple 11. This member 13 has teeth 16 1929. Serial No. 353,100.
formed thereon, which teeth are adapted to be engaged by similar teeth 17 formed upon the hooked portion 18. The hook portion has a downwardly-turned end 19 which is 7 adapted to enter the staple 12.
The upper portion of the hook member has depressions 21 formed therein, which de-' pressions are adapted to accommodate the resilient end 22 of a slider 23. This slider is rectangular in shape and is sufficient in size to an accommodate themembers 13 and 18. This slider is preferably slightly tapered, the purpose of which is obvious.
It will thus be seen that by moving the slider to the dotted line position of Figure I, the member 18 maybe quickly adjusted upon the member 13 after which the slider is again moved to its full line position and the hook employed in the usual manner.
It is to be understood that the form of my invention herewith shown and described is to be taken as a preferred example of the same, and that various changes relative to the shape, size, material and arrangement of parts may be resorted to without departing from the spirit of the invention or the scope of the subjoined claim.
Having thus described my invention, I claim A gate hook comprising a pair of members, one of saidmembers being pivoted to asuitable supportand having teeth formed there-. on, the other of said member having teeth formed thereon and adapted to engage the first mentioned teeth, the other of said mem- 35 bers having a hook formed at its free end, a slider positioned on said members and adapted to hold said members in engagement with each other, said slider having a resilient end adapted to engage depressions formed in one of said members for the purpose of maintaining said slider against accidental movement.
In testimonywhereof I afiix my signature.
EARL L. H. GRAFF.
