IMPROVEMENT IN TRUNK-HINGES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. [80,129, dated July 25, 1876; application filed April 1, 1876.

My device consists of a hinge of two pieces of metal, separate and distinct, forming two leaves, the upper leaf having a brace extending out from it and a pintle, and the lower leaf is provided with a depression in it, which, when fastened to a trunk, the trunk forms a portion of thc box of which the depression forms a part, into which the pintle of the upper leaf fits, and the lower leaf has also a depression in it, which, when it is on a trunk, forms a slot into which the brace of the upper leaf tits, and when the lid of the trunk is raised the outer end of the brace strikes against the outer end of the slot, and prevents the lid from falling back.
Figure 1 is a view of the hinges as shown when attached to a trunk; Fig. 2, a View of the upper leaf of the hinge when detached from the trunk; and Fig. 3, a view of the lower leaf of the hinge.
A is the upper leafof the hinge; B, the lower leaf of same; 0, the brace which holds the trunk-lid up, cast solid on the leaf A, and adapted to enter a slot in the leaf B; D, the slot in which the brace enters; E, the depression in the lower leaf, forming a box for the pintle F of the upper leaf. The lower leaf is clasped onto the corner of a trunk, and secured to the same, and the pintle of the upper lip is put into the box E, and the brace into slot D in the lower leaf, and the upper leaf is secured to the corner of the lid, which, when together in this manner, forms a hinge and brace for trunk. The brace is for the purpose of preventing the lid from falling over the back of the trunk.
I claim as my invention The trunk-hinge consisting of the leaves A and B, the leaf A provided with a brace, O, forming an integral part thereof, adapted to enter a slot in the leaf B, all substantially as and for the purpose shown and described.
