Description

CQFRANKISH.
MATCH-SAFE.
No.179,850, .Patented J1;1y18.1876.
fav fnd/(GMM) UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CHARLES FRANKISH, OF TOPEKA, KANSAS, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF HIS RIGHT TO WILLIAM GLASGOW, OF OHIOAGO,4ILLINOIS.
IMPROVEMENT IN MATCH-SAFES. .i
. Specification forming part of Letters Patent N0. 179,850, dated July 18, 1876; application filed December 18, 1875.
To all whom t't may concern:
f Be it known that I, CHARLES FRANKISH, of Topeka, in the county ot' Shawnee, State ot' Kansas, have invented certain Improvements in Match-Safes, of which the followingr is a specification describing my invention.
My invention relates to a match sai'e or box from which the matches are to be delivered endwise, one at a time, without removing the cov'er, by means of a lever operating a suitablyconstructed lifter.
Referring to the drawings, Figure l is an outline View of the match-safe. Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view. Fig; 3 is a View ot' the match-litter. Fig. 4 is a cross-seotion ot` tube, spring, lifter, and lever.
The match-receptacle A is cylindrical in shape, having a funnel-shaped bottom, A1,
and top A2. 1n the bottom funnel is an apertnre,11p through which passes the wire lifter a when actuated by the thumb-lever c c. The
lifter a is embraced by a spiral spring, d, andthese two are inclosed in a tube, b, having` two slots, in which moves up and down the lever c, which raises the lifter by bearing on the rounded end a. The upper side of this round end affords a shoulder upon which the spiral springI rests. The upper end of wire lifter should be serrated, as shown, to prevent the match from slipping ot't'. Both the top and bottom are made of metal, funnel-shaped, being pressed or spun. The top is removable to allow the matches to be placed in, and has an aperture to allow the esca-pe of the match endwise. On the exterior ofthe top are springs g g. which clasp the match on its exit, and retain it from slipping back into the sate when the lever is released.
The stand or rim F I prefer to make ot' castirou, as bestcalculated to give it the requisite steadiness, though it may be made ot' wood, it' desired, and covered with emery.
Match-sales having` the arrangement herein described for delivering the matches endwise, one at a time, can be made in a variety otl ornamental designs and styles. The plainest style may be made comparatively inexpensive.
Having described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent,
l. A portable match-safe having a funnelshaped top, A?, removable, and a similarshaped bottom, A1, with an aperture in the top for-the exit ot' the match, the wire lifter a, spiral spring d, and thumblever c c, arranged as and for the purpose specified.
2. In a match-safe having a thumb-lever, such as described, to raise or eject the match,
the combination, with the funnclshaped top- A2, ot' the two springs g g, secured thereto on opposite sides ot' the aperture for the exit ot' the match, i'or the purpose specified.
