Description
J. A. DA'VUID.
UNIVERSAL STENCIL-PLATES.
Patented .Tu1y11,1876.
UNITED STATES PATENT QFEICE.
JOSEPH A. DAVID, 0F NEW YORK, N. Y.
IMPROVEMENT-IN UNIVERSAL sTENclL-PLATES.
Specification forming part ot Letters Patent No. [79.686, dated .luly 11, 1876; application tiled May 1, 1576.
To all whom it 'may concern:
, Be it known that I, JOSEPH A. DAVID, of the cit-y, county, and State ot' New York, have invented a new and Improved Universal Sten.- cilLetter-Traoer, of whicl the following is a specitication:
In the accompanying drawing, Figure l represents a top view ot' my improved stencil letter-traiter, and Fig. 2 representations of a letter and tgure traced thereby.
My invention relates to au improved stencilplate, by which letters, numbers, and other characters may be traced in plain or ornamented style, to be used as a universal stencil-plate for sign-painters and others, and also as a toy for the instructive amusement of children.
The invention consists of a stencil-plate on which all the letters of the alphabet and numerals are so combined that any combination ot' them may be made. The stencil-plate is provided with .space-sections at the sides, and top and bottom guide-pieces.
In the drawing,A represents a stencil-plate, ot' any suitable material, that is cut out in such a manner that-a combination of the letters of' the alphabet and of the numerals from 0 to 9 is formed thereby.
The letters and numerals may be out in any size or style, with shade-lines, or other ornamentation, as desired.
The stencil-plate has side strips or sections '13, by which the space between letters or numerals is obtained. Top and bottom guides C, that are extended at the ends beyond the space strips or sections B, serve as guides for placing the plate iito position for tracing the letters. Any letter or numeral may be traced with the stencil-tracer.
The stencil-plate forms, with little practice, a cheap device for assisting sign-painters in tracing and spacing letters in aquick and convenient manner, producing them with absolute uniformity.
The plate may also be made ot' cheaper material, and employed as an instructive toy for children, teaching them to form words or numbers, by tracing the individual letters or numeral-s.
Having thus described my invention, what l claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. A universal stencil-plate having the letters ot' the alphabet and the numerals cut` therein, and arranged inthe manner described, and for the purpose set forth.
2. The universal stencil plate above described, having side strips or sections for spacing the letters or numerals, substantially as described.
3. A universal stencil-plate provided with top and bottom guide-strips extending over the side space-strips, substantially as specified.
