To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, FREDERICK MORGAN, a subject 'of the King of England, residing at Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Amusement Device, of which the following is a specification.

The object of this .invention is to provide a novel and entertaining amusement device.

To this end the same consists of a figure made up of relatively movable sections and having overlapping edges and means for operating the sections so that they will assume different relative positions. By making the sections, for example, four in number and by making the same comprise the face of a character, the relative positions assumed by the sections will cause different facial expressions and will give amusing and effective results.

One way in which the device can be constructed is shown in the accompanying drawing in which,

Figure 1 is a front view thereof. Fig. 2 is a central sectional view. Fig. 3 is a cross sectional view, and Figs. 4, 5 and 6 are detail views of the three underneath sections.

Referring to the drawings and in detail, A designates a suitable back or base piece. The four sections are designated by the reference letters B, C, D and E. These sections are assembled on top of each other so that the edges of the same will overlap. These sections have various portions of a face or of the anatomy printed or drawn thereon so that as they assume different relative positions, different facial expressions will be effected. The two upper sections B and C are pivoted to the back piece A by a pivot 10. The two left-hand sections B and D are connected together as by a pivot 11; the two right-hand sections C and E are connected together as by a pivot 12 and the two lower sections D and E are connected together by a pivot 13. A slider or operating piece 14 is mounted between guides or wings 1515 secured on the rear of the base piece A. A slot 16 is cut through the base piece and the pivot 13 extends therethrough and is also connected to the slider 14. The slider may be provided with a suitable operating handle or knob 17. The upper left hand section B preferably has a slot 18 cut therethrough to represent the left-hand eye and the pupil of the left-hand eye is drawn or painted on the righthand upper section G. The overlapping sections may be made of celluloid or other thin material. By operating the slider 14 the sections will assume different relative positions and the facial expressions of the figure will undergo surprising and amusing chan es.

The idea can be applied to many kinds of figures and can be arranged in many different ways without departing from the scope of my invention as expressed in the claims.

Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters-Patent is 1. An amusement device consisting of a base piece, a figure mounted thereon, and consisting of sections havin their edges overlapping, a pivot attached to the base and pivotally connecting two of the overlapping edges of two adjoining sections, bodily movable free pivots pivotally connecting other overlapping edges, another pivot connecting still other overlapping edges and a movable operating member supporting this last named pivot and adapted to shift the same.

2. In combination, a base piece provided with a slot, a face figure mounted wholly in front of said base piece and consisting of sections having their edges overlapping, a pivot supported on the base and pivotally connecting two of said overlapping edges together, free pivots pivotally connecting other overlapping edges, another pivot connecting other overlapping edges and extending through said slot, and a movable operating member supporting this last named pivot and mounted behind the base piece.

3. An amusement device comprising a figure having four relatively movable overlapping sections, a pivot connecting the two upper sections, means for connecting the two righthand sections, means for connecting the two left-hand sections, a pivot connecting the two lower sections, and means for operating one of said pivots.

4. In combination, a base piece, a face figure mounted wholly in front thereof and consisting of relatively movable sections having their edges overlapping, means for pivotally attaching two of said sections to the base, free bodily movable pivots attaching said sections -to the remaining sections of the figure, another bodily movable pivot connecting other sections together, and a device behind the base for shifting this last named pivot.

5. An amusement device comprising a base piece, a figure having a face made in four sections, a pivot fixed to said base piece and connecting the two upper sections, a pivot connecting the two right-hand sections, the pivot connecting the two lefthand sections, a lower pivot connecting the two lower sections, and means for operating the lower pivot.

6. An amusement device comprising a base piece, a figure mounted thereon and made up of four relatively movable overlapping sections, a pivot passing through the base piece to which the two upper sections are connected, a pivot connecting the two left-hand sections, a pivot connecting the two right-hand sections, a pivot connecting the two lower sections, and a slider mounted on the back of the base piece to which the lower pivot is connected.

7. An amusement device comprising a figure made up of relatively movable face sections having overlapping edges, one of said sections having a hole through it to represent an eye socket and the adjacent overlapping section having the pupil of said eye pictured on it behind said opening, this latter section having also pictured on it a complete eye beyond the edge 01": the adjacent section having the eye socket, and means for operating the said sections to cause them to assume different relative positions.
