Serial No. 400,221.-
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in a ribbon inking device for typewriter ribbons.
The invention has for an object the provision of a device of the classmentioned which is of simple durable construction, dependable in use and eilicient in action, and which can be manufactured and sold at a reasonable cost.
0 The invention proposes a frame, a support for the frame. parallel shafts supported on the frame and arranged for holding a pair of ribbon bobbins in the same plane with the web of a ribbon wound on the bobbins extend- 5 ed between the bobbins, and an inking device mounted on the frame and capable of inking said web upon the winding of the ribbon from one to the other of the bobbins. It is also proposed to make said inking de- 0 vice adjustable and of multi-color construction for simultaneously inking more than one color.
For further comprehension of the invention,-and of the objects and advantages thereof, reference will be had to the following description and accompanying drawings, and to the appended claims in which the various novel features of the invention are more particularly set forth.
0 Inthe accompanying drawing forming a material part of this disclosure:
Fig.1 is a front elevational view of a device constructed according to this invention.
Fig. 2 is an end elevational view of Fig.1.
Fig. .3 is a plan view of Fig. 1. V
Fig. t is a fragmentary vertical sectional View taken on the line Hof Fig. 1.
Fig. 5 is an enlarged sectional view taken on the line 55 of Fig. 4:-
6 is an enlarged fragmentary sectional view taken on the line 66 of Fig. 1..
Fig. 7 is an enlarged fragmentary sectional view taken on the line 7-7 of Fig. 3.
Fig. 8 is a horizontal sectional view taken on the line 88 of Fig. 7.
Fig. 9 is a fragmentary view of a portion of Fig. 1 but illustrating a modified construction.
Fig. 10 is an end elevational view of Fig. 9.
The ribbon inking device for typewriter ribbons consistsof a frame 10, a support 11 for the frame, parallel shafts 12 supported on theframe and arranged for holding a pair of ribbon bobbins 13 in the same plane with the web 14. of a ribbon wound on thebobbinsextended. between thebobbins, and an inkingdevice 15 mounted on the frame and capa I ble of inking said "web upon the winding of the ribbon from one to the other of the bobbins.
The frame 10 consists of a pair of plates 16 and 17 secured together and of a shape'to present a top arm 18, a bottom arm 19 and'side arms 20. .The side arms 20 are formed with outwardly pressed portions 21 supporting tubes 22 and constituting a. bearing for the shafts 12. I The support 11 for the frame consists of a plate 23 having a tongue 24 struck from the material of the'plate and arrangediat right angles to the plane of the plate, and a bottom end 25 bent' at rightangles to the plate andparallel witlrthe tongue; 24:. A
The shafts 12 extend thru the said tubes 22 whichconstitute bearings and as shown on the drawing are parallel. Each of the shafts are'provided with rear ends 31 square in transverse cross section as indicated in Fig.-
5. A handle 32 may be'engaged upon the square ends of the shafts for the manual bobbins are shown in full lines without any typewriting ribbon.
The inking device 15 is supported upon the frame of the device by a dovetailed rail 36 which projects from the top arm 18. This rail extends across the path of motion of the web 14. The inking device consists of a container 87 provided with a bottom dovetailed groove receiving the rail 36 so as to provide partments for holding inks of different colors. A wick 41 is mounted in each of the compartments and slightly extends above the top of the container as indicated by reference numeral 42 in Fig. 7. A wick support bar 43 acts against the wick for holding it in various extended positions and is supported by an arm 44 pivoted intermediate of its ends as at 45. An adjustment screw 46 I threadedly engages a lug 47 projecti from Q: the partition 40, and abuts the free end of the arm 44 for holding the wick support bar in various positions against the wick.
The inking device is filled with inking fluid preferably consisting of turpentine and coloring, but any other inking fluid may be used.
In Figs. 9 and 10, a modified form of the 7 device has been shown in which the bottom arm 19 of the frame of the device is formed with a pair of arcnate slots 48 having a common center. The bottom end of the arm 19 is curved as indicated by numeral 49. The support plate 23 engages between the plates 16 and 17 composing the frame and is provided with projecting studs 50 engaging thru the slots 48. Lock nuts 51 engage upon the studs for holding the plate 28 in various angular positions, as for sample indicated by dot and dash lines 52. This arrangement permits the device to be attached upon an inclined support board or shelf.
In operation of the device, it is attached upon a support board or shelf. The attachment is accomplished by the clamping screw 26 and the tongue 24. The nuts Soars then disengaged fr m the shafts 12 and bobbins containing a typewriter ribbon engaged upon theshafts; The nuts are DBXL replaced and tightly screwed down upon the bobbins for holding them for rotation with the rotations of the shafts. Theinking device is n st adjust-ed so that the web 14 of the ribbon upon the bobbins receives properinking. Then the handle 32 rotated for drawing the web cr s he nking e While I have shown and described the preferred embodiment of my invention, it is to be understood that I do not limit myself to the precise construction herein disclosed and the right is reserved to all changes and modifications coming within the scope of the invention as defined in the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by United States Letters Patent is 1. A ribbon inking device for typewriter ribbons comprising a frame, a support for the frame, parallel shafts supported on the frame and arranged for holding a pair of ribbon bobbins in the same plane, with the web of a ribbon wound on the bobbins extended between the bobbins, and an inking device mounted on the frame and capable of inking said web upon the winding of the ribbon from one to the other of the bobbins, said support for the frame consisting of aplate with a struck out tongue and a bent bottom end parallel with the tongue, said plate being attached upon the frame, a clamping screw threadedly eiwa ged. thru the bent end of the plate and .coaciablo with the tongue for clamping, studs projecting from said plate and engaging through slots in the frame, and lock nuts threwiedly engaging on the studs to constitu the attachment of the plate on the frame so tl at the plate may assume various positions permitting attachment of the device in variens positions.
2. A ribbon inking device for typewriter ribbons comprising a frame, a support for the frame, parallel shafts supported on the frame and arranged for holding a pair of ribbon bobbins in the same plane, with the web of -a ribbon wound on the bobbinsextended between the bobbins, and an inking device mounted on the frame and capable of inking said web upon the winding ofthe ribbon from one to the other of the bobbins, said support for the frame consisting of a plate with a struck out tongue and a. bent bottom end parallel with the tongue, said plate being attached upon the frame, aclamping screw threadedlv engaged thruthe bent end of the plate and coactable with the tongue. for clamping, said plate being adjustably con- ALGIS.
