HAND-STAMP.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 578,423, dated March 9, 1897.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, LEWIS H. RICHARDSON, a citizen of the United States, residing in Boston, in the county of Suffolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented new and useful Improvements in Hand-Stamps, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to that class of handstamps in which the characters to be printed are formed in rubber and are adapted to be spread with ink by means of a separate inking device. In this improvement the frame is provided at its opposite ends with a pair of 7 bars or hangers Which support detachably a type-roll or type-bar provided with a plurality of flat surfaces adapted to contain different characters or words. This type-roll is adapted to be rotated by means of a pawl which engages a ratchet rigidly secured to the type-bar, said pawl being lifted by a lever provided with a suitable handle, said lever being held normally down by a spring. Liftin g the pawl rotates the type-bar sufficiently to present a different surface, .and the typebar is held in such position by a retainingpawl until the engaging pawl is again lifted.

In the accompanying drawings, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts, Figure 1 is a front elevation of my improved hand-stamp. Fig. 2 is an end elevation of the same. Fig. 3 is an elevation of the opposite end.

A represents the frame or body of the device, provided with a suitable handle or knob a. Rigidly secured at b to the opposite ends of the frame A are the bars or hangers B B, said hangers extending for a sufficient distance below the frame to support rotatively the type-roll or type-bar O by means of the spindles O, which extend from the opposite ends thereof into slots 01 in the hangers B B. These slots extend from the lower ends of the hangers upward and bend into the portions cl, into which said spindles extend. Asprin g D is secured at one end by means of the eye or strap 6 to the hanger B, and near its opposite end it bears against the'spindle O and holds it in the portion 61 of the slot d.

The type-roll or type-bar O has its periphery formed into a plurality of fiat surfaces, (four being shown in the drawings,) each of which surfaces is provided with an inscription in rubber type. Hence this device can-take the place of as many hand-stamps as there are surfaces on the type-bar. One .end of this type-bar or type-roll has rigidly secured to it the ratchet E. (See broken lines in Fig. 3.) Pivoted at f to the frame A is a lifting arm or lever F, provided with the upward extension F, said extension being bent up from the upper fold F of the lifting-arm, said told being bent over upon the upper edge of the frame, while the main portion is against the front surface thereof. A spring H extends from-the handle or knob a and bears against the portion F, thus holding the portion F normally down upon the upper edge of the frame. A spring-pawl K has its upper end swiveled in the lifting-lever F, extends down through the guides L, secured to the front of the frame, and has its lower end bent at K,

so as to engage the ratchet E. This pawl also serves, by its pressure upon the ratchet, to hold the spindle G into the portion d of the slot 01 in the hanger B. Pressing the portion F inward lifts the arm or lever F F into the position indicated by broken lines in Fig. 1, and thus causes the pawl K to rise and impart a quarter of a rotation to the ratchet E, and hence to the type-bar 0, thus presenting another surface thereof for use.

A retaining-pawl P has its upper end secured to the rear side of the frame and extends down through a guide P onto the periphery of the ratchet-wheel E and thus prevents the type-bar from rotation other than by engagement with the pawl K.

The type-roll C may be removed, if desired,

by pressing the spindle C out of the portions d into the slots d against the power of the spring D and the spring-pawl K.

Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

1. In a hand-stamp of the character described, in combination, the frame A; the bars or hangers B, B secured to the ends of and extending down below the frame; a type-bar or type-roll supported rotatively by said hangers and formed with a plurality of fiat surfaces adapted to receive diiferent characters or inscriptions; the lifting arm or lever F pivotally secured to one end of the frame, formed with the portion F which overlaps and lies normally upon the upper end of the frame and with the upturned portion F"; a spring supported by the frame and bearing normally against said upturned portion; a ratchet rigidly secured to one end of the type-roll; and a pawl extendin g from the liftin g-arm through guides supported by the frame into engagement with said ratchet, substantially as set forth.

2. In a hand-stamp of the character described, in combination, the frame A; the bars or hangers B, B secured to the ends of and extending down below the frame; a type-bar or type-rol1 supported rotatively by said hangers and formed with a plurality of flat surfaces adapted to receive different characters or inscriptions; the lifting arm or lever F pivotally secured to one end of the frame,

formed with the portion F which overlaps ing-pawl P secured at one end to the frame and itsopposite end bearing on the ratchet; and the spring D secured to the hanger B and bearing against one of the spindles extending from the type-roll; all substantially as described.
